Alex Burg Profile

Alex Burg’s pro baseball debut has been put on hold. Burg, who hobbled through Washington State’s final games on an injured knee, underwent arthroscopic surgery last Monday for a torn meniscus and partially torn anterior cruciate ligament.

“I actually walked out of surgery,” Burg said by phone Friday from Scottsdale, Ariz., where he has been assigned by the San Francisco Giants. “I was (supposed to be) on crutches my first day, but I didn’t like them, so I just started walking.”

Burg said the Giants plan to limit him to designated hitter duties when he begins play in the Rookie-class Arizona League in four to six weeks. “They don’t want me to rush into catching,” Burg said.

Burg ranked among the Pacific-10 Conference leaders in several offensive categories before missing a month of action after he collided with USC first baseman Alex Oropesa while running to first April 25 in WSU’s 13-3 win at Los Angeles.

Burg led WSU players who started more than half the games with a .346 batting average, .631 slugging percentage and .469 on-base percentage in 40 games. He was drafted in the 24th round as a catcher last month after completing his senior season at WSU.
