| Biography: |
Projects at linebacker for Washington State. Gained 20 pounds while actually increasing his speed over the offseason. Was a multi-purpose force at Mead, playing tight end, linebacker, receiver and safety in high school. A consensus All-State pick following his dominating 2005 performance. One of only four players in the state of Washington rated "blue chip" by the Seattle Times. No. 8 on Scout.com's Northwest 100 list and No. 56 on the West Hot 100 list. Clocked his senior year at 4.6 in the 40 -- run on wet grass, but is now in the high 4.5 range.
An uber-athlete, Mattingly shined on the hardcourt, can easily dunk and also liked to "use all five of my fouls." Also starred on the baseball diamond in 2006 -- led the GSL in virtually every statistical category, including triples (8), batting average (.615), and stolen bases (20). Spurned interest from Dodgers, Twins and Diamondbacks prior to June 2006 MLB draft -- "I wanted to play football."
Career stats:
Defense: 160 solo tackles among Mattingly's 231 career takedowns, placing second all-time at Mead. Also No. 2 all-time in career interceptions with nine.
Offense: 81 catches for 1,130 yards, second all time at Mead. Started every game since his sophomore year, Mattingly has never missed a game to injury.
In the playoffs in 2005, rushed 14 times for 106 yards and threw one touchdown pass.
SR Year: 70 tackles with five interceptions, forced a fumble and had two fumble recoveries. He took one of the interceptions back 54 yards for a score, plus a fumble recovery went 40 yards for another touchdown. Offensively in 2005 , Mattingly had 41 receptions for 631 yards and six touchdowns. Racked up 359 return yards on punts and kickoffs.
JR Year: 90 tackles, (66 solo), 2 INTs, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 sack. 30 catches for 401 yards, 4TDs with 4 carries for 116 yards, 3TDs.
Both fast and a big hitter from the secondary, Mead coach Sean Carty says he also has uncommon ability receiving the ball... "Great hands," said Carty. "Some of the best hands we've ever had."
