WSU Practice: defense gets a workout

PULLMAN — The Cougars’ defense had no problem staying warm on a chilly Tuesday night in Pullman. They finished the practice on a hot note, but they didn’t begin the day that way. At the start of practice, the D kept the blood pumping by doing up-downs as punishment for not wrapping up and not being in the right spot.

THE COUGAR BLOG: Updated Oct 1 at 9:47 pm

A RUNNING LIST of news, notes, quips and quotes from in and around the Cougar Nation. Updated regularly.

Connor Halliday & the Heisman: Time to talk

PULLMAN -- No, Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday isn’t there yet. Nor should he be. Though the senior from Spokane is the nation’s leading passer – by a wide margin – he has yet to enter the national Heisman Trophy discussion. But if the last two weeks are a prelude to what’s on the horizon, Halliday absolutely, positively should crash the debate before the sun sets on the 2014 season.

HOOPS: How Robert Franks fits into WSU future

HOW WILL ROBERT FRANKS (6-8, 220) out of Vancouver, Wash. fit in the future of Washington State and Pacific-12 basketball? A veteran Portland high school coach, who lives in Vancouver and has sons that played with Franks growing up, believes the Cougars spent wisely on this scholarship offer.

Mike Leach uses new locker room to light fire

PULLMAN—Mike Leach decided enough was enough after the Nevada loss. Following a disappointing performance in Reno to start the season 0-2, Leach told the players to pack it up - they'd be returning to their old haunt in Bohler until earning the right to reside in WSU's new locker room in the $61 million Cougar Football Complex. Their time in the old locker room turned out to be a short stay.

The Early Glimpse: Cougs vs. Bears

DURING THE EARLY STAGES of Saturday’s game against Utah, I began making a few plans as to what I might write in this week’s Washington State look ahead to California. Down 21-0, the theme was fairly obvious: must beat Cal to save the season. But then the Cougs figured out a few things and roared back in the second half to beat Utah 28-27. Suddenly the Cal game takes on an entirely different look.

VERBAL: Kent and WSU land in-state forward

FOR THE LAST two years, WSU assistant coach Curtis Allen had been recruiting in-state forward Robert Franks. The Vancouver product was patiently waiting for his crimson offer to come through. And on Monday night, Allen put the offer on the table and the stretch-four prospect wasted no time in letting him know he wanted to join the Cougar family.

NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Four

WASHINGTON STATE alum Husain Abdullah punctuated a huge Kansas City victory against New England on Monday night with a fourth-quarter interception of a Tom Brady pass that he returned 39 yards for a touchdown. What ensued, however, caused something of a Twitter storm.

Graham Harrell with some great WSU QB insight

SPOKANE -- When you pull off a thrilling, come-from-behind Pac-12 road win, it means just one thing for a Monday Cougar Club luncheon: It’s a good time to send in the new guy and Graham Harrell offered some terrific insights on the quarterback stable at Washington State.

Utah win tickles Mike Leach's funny bone

PULLMAN— There's nothing like a win to brighten a coach's mood. Mike Leach delivered a comedy routine along with his usual answers about football at Monday’s press conference. Beyond the win against Utah and the upcoming matchup vs. California, Leach said River Cracraft has succeeded because he hasn’t allowed distractions in. He added a prediction about what technology will lead to in the future.

WSU verbals roundup: Future Cougs shine

THE HIGH SCHOOL football season is well underway, and the future Cougars had plenty to show for themselves this week in CF.C’s roundup.

CF.C Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week Five

COUGAR FANS PROBABLY aren't aware of it because WSU's academic schedule is so different from their neighbors to the south. But beginning today Oregon must deal with a new and significant challenge to their goal of winning football games and making the new NCAA four-team playoff.
