HALFTIME: Cougs ‘swarm’ Sun Devils

HALFTIME: Cougs ‘swarm’ Sun Devils

THE NICKNAME “DESERT SWARM” applied to Arizona’s dominant defense of the early 1990s. But that moniker might as well have been applied to Washington State on Saturday morning as the Cougars stymied No. 13 Arizona State’s offense for most of the first half. Despite that, WSU needed a late field goal to take a 24-21 lead into halftime at Sun Devil Stadium.

5 Keys to WSU winning at Arizona State

5 Keys to WSU winning at Arizona State

WHEN WASHINGTON STATE has the ball on Saturday (Pac-12 Networks, 10 a.m. PST) look for Luke Falk and the Cougs to be aggressive. No, that doesn’t necessarily mean chucking it deep. In fact, I would argue that they won’t look to throw a lot of passes that take time to develop against blitz-happy ASU. In this case, being aggressive means …

Cougs win: Hawkinson soars in first start

Cougs win: Hawkinson soars in first start

PULLMAN— On first glance, it was hard to say which was more noteworthy in Washington State's 80-68 win over Idaho State: DaVonte Lacy catching fire and looking like his old self during a second-half surge -- or Josh Hawkinson exploding for a game-high 26 points on his way to his second straight double-double. Check that, on further review, it's not that tough of a call.

WSU vs. ASU: Sun Devil insider weighs in

COUGFAN.COM ASKED SUN DEVIL INSIDER Hod Rabino of DevilsDigest.com to weigh in on all things Arizona State, including what’s gone on with the defense this year and why, how QB Taylor Kelly has fared since his return from injury, the two guys on offense Kelly looks for one whole heckuva lot and more…

Arizona State 101: Beat the blitz

Arizona State 101: Beat the blitz

WITH THE COUGS coming off a bye week, the Arizona State game looked like a fantastic upset opportunity for Wazzu. Alas, Oregon State beat them to the punch. So will last week's upset by the Beavers wake the Sun Devils up, or did it better expose the Sun Devils' weaknesses?

JORDAN RAILEY

Could WSU hoops schedule be built any worse?

STEVE KELLEY, the retired Seattle Times columnist, used to “interview” his alter ego – the aptly named Jim Ratt – every now and then when searching for answers about something going on with the Seattle Sonics. I was never a huge fan of Jim Ratt, but it dawned on me one day that I have my own version of Jim to chat with. Except mine isn’t a fictional character in the corner of my mind.

ADAM MCLEAN

Cougar Recruiting Notebook

A FOUR-STAR DEFENSIVE TACKLE out of Maryland, and a member of the Scout.com 300, will take an official visit to Washington State in early December. The Palouse trip is intriguing for several reasons, including the fact he made it official this week he’s no longer committed to a Big Ten program.

Thursday Night Football: WSU frosh runs wild

Thursday Night Football: WSU frosh runs wild

PULLMAN — Perhaps the greatest compliment a player can receive is a coach saying the opponent must game plan against him. That discussion leads to Keith Harrington (pictured above). Linebackers coach Ken Wilson said the best way to contain Harrington is to send multiple players and try to bottle him up. Harrington showed in exacting detail why he draws such a crowd during Thursday Night Football.

KENT: Burn the tape and order up more Hawk

KENT: Burn the tape and order up more Hawk

PULLMAN–After falling to TCU by 27 points, does first-year WSU coach Ernie Kent spend a lot of time using that loss as a teaching moment for his youth-laden roster? “You burn that film,” Kent said. Okay, that seems pretty clear, thanks coach. There haven’t been many bright spots in the Wazzu’s 0-2 start but one of them has been Josh Hawkinson. And WSU fans are going to see more of him.

Pasadena 4-star Taeon Mason tripping to WSU

YOU CAN ADD another 4-star recruit to the list of those tripping to Washington State for the Apple Cup. Pasadena CB/WR prospect Taeon Mason, who has been verbally committed to USC since February, tells CF.C he’ll be in Pullman on an official visit for the Nov. 29 tilt.

Future Coug Hilinski: More than stats

Future Coug Hilinski: More than stats

UPLAND AND Chino Hills, the Inland Valley’s top two teams back in October, had just finished up. Upland QB Tyler Hilinski had led his team to a 28-16 victory but Upland coach Tim Salter pulled Hilinski aside afterwards. He thought his star player was forcing things and pointed to two first half interceptions. The point was not lost on Hilinski, who will enroll at Washington State in January.
