THIS WEEK IN WSU HOOPS: Tourney starts today

THIS WEEK IN WSU HOOPS: Tourney starts today

IF THE COUGARS want to earn another Great Alaska Shootout title (2009), they’ll have to do something that's proven difficult the past two-plus seasons: win on the road. The Cougs have won three combined road games in that time, a total they’d need to equal over the next three days to win the tourney. Their opponent tonight (CBS Sports Network, 9 p.m.) may provide the most difficult test of all.

Apple Cup overflows with memorable tales

IN THE MANY years Cougfan.com has been covering the crimson landscape, the Apple Cup has offered up a mountain of fertile journalistic ground to plow. Colorful characters, epic tales, great performances and so much more.

Vince Mayle

WSU Practice: Mayle's back & D is fired up

PULLMAN— Wide receiver Vince Mayle returned to practice on Wednesday, but he did not do as much as the rest of his teammates. The redshirt senior participated in drills early in practice but then stayed on the sidelines for the majority of the time. The defensive line also shuffled around throughout the session, and there was a physical altercation that ended with a hurled helmet.

Luke Falk

CF.C Coach's Chalkboard with Robin Pflugrad

I'VE BEEN FORTUNATE enough to coach in five Apple Cups. Alas, my record is 2-3. We were able to win 30 games in three years (11-game schedule) at WSU but we lost all three games to the Dawgs during that time. The triple overtime '02 game in Pullman still makes my blood boil (wish we would have had video review back then.) But one of my fondest Apple Cup memories was our win in 2005.

Apple Cup Snapshot: Position Matchup

Apple Cup Snapshot: Position Matchup

THE QUARTERBACKS will be center stage when the 107th Apple Cup kicks off on Saturday (Fox Sports 1, 7:30 p.m.) but what about the other units? Who has the edge between the Cougars and Huskies -- how do they match up? Here's the snapshot ...

Washington 101: Hold the line

Washington 101: Hold the line

FOR WHATEVER REASON, the Cougars always seem to play their best in Apple Cups when bowls aren't part of the equation. The Huskies earned bowl eligibility with a win over Oregon State last week, so both teams are playing for pride coming into Saturday. The Huskies will bring with them a formidable pass rush when they square off against Luke Falk and the pass-heavy Cougars.

WSU Practice: Big wide receiver missing

WSU Practice: Big wide receiver missing

PULLMAN — An energized group of Cougars practiced in the rain on Tuesday, preparing for their bitter rivals from Seattle who also know their way around a little precipitation. The practice began with pep and that continued throughout the day, but one player’s absence stuck out.

Kent hopes they throw kitchen sink at Hawk

PULLMAN - After Josh Hawkinson’s latest impressive outing this young season -- 26 points and 15 rebounds in his first career start -- teams are bound to try and take Hawkinson out of the game, or at least try to limit him. So why is Ernie Kent smiling?

DEVANTE WILSON

Rising JUCO DE sets WSU official visit

MIKE LEACH HISTORICALLY dips into the junior college recruiting pool selectively and sparingly. But the 2015 class at Riverside City College in California certainly seems to be a worthy exception. Washington State has six known offers out to RCC athletes, including one to a rising defensive end who will take his official visit to the Palouse in a few short weeks.

Snow for the Apple Cup?

Snow for the Apple Cup?

THE LONG-RANGE forecast for Pullman calls for a high near 50 degrees on Friday. But then a bitter cold front is expected to drop in during Saturday's early morning hours -- and with all the subtlety of a Jeremiah Allison tackle. Could there also be snow falling when the Cougs and Huskies meet in the 107th Apple Cup?

CF.C Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week Twelve

YES, THE POWER RANKINGS took some time off. I had to see a man about a horse. And an iguana. There were locusts. A terrible flood. It wasn’t my fault. (Blues Brothers still holds up after all these years.) Lovers of Pac-12 chaos this week will want to see UCLA lose to Stanford, ASU to go down against UA and the Ducks to bite it at OSU. And there's also a little something called the Apple Cup ...
