Cougar QB Connor Halliday needs a nickname

THE WHAMMER FROM LILLEHAMMER. Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it. And Connor Halliday is of Norwegian and Irish heritage, he isn’t actually from Norway. The timing isn’t great either, bestowing a nickname on a QB seven games into his senior season. But one has to try. He's gunning for the most single-season passing yards in the history of college football for cryin' out loud.

Thursday Night Football déjà vu

PULLMAN — Freshness was on the minds of the Cougar coaches on a crisp fall day. They have stressed that this bye week is a time to regroup, heal and hone skills, and that was readily apparent by the way the team practiced on Thursday. Several young players were featured for a second consecutive practice during Thursday Night Football, particularly along the offensive line.

4-star commit Joyner remains solid with WSU

WHEN AUSTIN JOYNER verbally committed to Washington State, he said he would sign with Wazzu as long as no major changes occurred to the staff. A little over a week ago, his area recruiter Eric Russell was let go by head man Mike Leach. So where do things stand between Joyner and the Cougs? Have he and the WSU coaches talked recently? The in-state product spoke with CF.C about that and more.

WSU baseball fall report

THE COUGS’ TOP three hitters turned pro along with a key pitcher and the starting shortstop. Another starting pitcher graduated, as did a relief pitcher who led the team in wins. One season after falling far short of the team’s goal of playing in the NCAA baseball tournament, the Washington State Cougars are loaded with youth and inexperience.

Recruiting: Pair of Hawaii OL set WSU visits

THE APPLE CUP is more than six weeks away but Nov. 29 is already circled on the calendar for Kapolei, Hawaii offensive tackle prospect Pesi Savea, who locked in his official visit to the Palouse on Wednesday. Already checking in at a massive 6-7, 310-pounds, Savea said he won’t be making the trip alone.

PRACTICE: Mele wants special teams 'flying'

PULLMAN — So much for the calm before the storm. On Wednesday, the Cougars had anything but a placid practice as the skies opened on the players as they ran through drills, scrimmages and Thursday Night Football. Also, Eric Mele talked to the media for the first time since taking the interim position of special teams coach.

COUGFAN TV: Bye not a holistic time for Leach

IT’S THE BYE WEEK for the Cougs and for the first practice held since last Friday's game, they held Thursday Night Football on a Wednesday. Mike Leach talked about the young guys who stood out, why it was a good practice, the focus on fundamentals during the bye, a soon to be record-setting graduation rate for the Cougs and more.

Quantifying Cougar D: Explosion plays

THE COUGAR DEFENSE through seven contests can be readily examined through two football terms: the first is one coaches have been using since the game was first played, the other is relatively modern.

CF.C Coach's Chalkboard with Robin Pflugrad

I WAS UNFORTUNATELY correct in last week’s article, (I really didn’t want to be correct). It is extremely challenging to prepare for and simulate Stanford’s offense during the practice week when you don’t run anything close to that offense. Your personnel is built for something different, making it near-impossible for your defense to get the realistic practice look they’ll get on game day.

CF.C Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week Seven

WASHINGTON STATE IS on a well-earned bye this week and needs a strong, four-of-five finishing kick to become bowl eligible. As tightly bunched as the Pac-12 is in the power rankings, it's a difficult but not impossible task.

Monday Morning Quarterbacking with Alex Brink

AS ROUGH AS the Stanford loss was, the Cougars were still very much in the ball game in the fourth quarter. In watching the game develop and seeing what the Cougars were doing, here are the major things stood out to me on each side of the ball.

Mike Leach doesn't take officiating bait

PULLMAN -- Mike Leach was asked at the end of his press conference about officiating, and whether or not it has improved over the years. For a brief instant, you could almost sense the WSU head man was debating on whether to start spending some dollars.
