Hoops: Metro Player of Year to walk on at WSU

IF THE MOST recent Seattle Metro League Player of the Year from Bainbridge Island is anything like the last one -- current Gonzaga U. standout Stephen Gray -- then Ken Bone just pulled off a recruiting coup. Six-foot-five Will Dilorio, a multi-dimensional shooting guard-small forward type, has accepted an invitation to walk on at Washington State.

The news, courtesy of the Kitsap Sun, comes one day after forward James Watson's mom broke the news through CF.C that her son's academic woes have prompted him to transfer to a junior college.

Dilorio told the Sun he will redshirt this upcoming season and then aim to earn a scholarship for 2011-12. He committed to the Cougs this past Thursday, he said.

Dilorio averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals per game for Bainbridge this past season. In a league that includes such notables as Rainier Beach, Seattle Prep and O'Dea, earning Player of the Year honors is no easy feat.

Diliorio -- whose dad, William, is a former track and field athlete at WSU -- took recruiting visits to Boise State, Idaho and Sacred Heart of the Horizon League, but told the Sun he "automatically like the place" when he tripped to Pullman.

Sacared Heart, of the Horizon League, offered Dilorio a scholarship.

NOTABLE: In March, Dilorio played in the state 3A-4A all-star game and one of his teammates was incoming Cougar point guard Andre Winston of Lakes High near Tacoma.

In addition to Diliorio and Winston, the Cougars' incoming class of recruits consists of 6-6 Dexter Kernich-Drew of Australia, 6-9 Patrick Simon of Ephrata and 6-4 junior college transfer Faisal Aden of San Diego.
