Fudarell "Dee" Maggitt, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound cornerback from Lakes High School in Lakewood, Wash., verbally committed to Hawai'i Wednesday after getting a chance to take a look at Manoa and see what the Warriors had to offer. He picked UH over offers from Washington State, Idaho, Idaho State and Air Force.
It was Maggitt's first time to the Aloha State, and he had been prepared for what to expect. "I was like, 'Wow'," Maggitt said on his first impression getting off the plane. "It felt like summer even though it's the winter. And the people were all really nice."
Maggitt played on the Mainland team in the second annual
Hawaii
/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, and completely shut down his side of the field en route to a 26-6 win. He had four pass breakups and a couple of tackles.
"Hawaii is getting a special player in Dee," said Lakes Head Coach Dave Miller via email. "He is the best shut-down corner that I have coached in my 25 years at Lakes High School."
After the game, it was onto Manoa for his official visit, and it didn't disappoint. "It just felt like a normal place to me," he said. "All the people there were great. The players greeted me really good and I really like the coaches and campus. The coaches were really inviting. They told me I'm their No. 1 choice and have recruited me the hardest all along."
The
Washington
Huskies - who already have three committed players from Lakes -
Sione Potoae
,
Jamaal Kearse
and
Darius Waters
- have told Maggitt they would be evaluating him at the end of the week. If the Huskies offered, would that sway his opinion?
"It wouldn't change my mind at all," he said matter-of-factly.
And academics are not a problem, according to Maggitt. He claims a 3.0 GPA (and rising), as well as a 1540 SAT. "As of now I'm fully qualified," he said.
