WASHINGTON STATE will without one of their top offensive playmakers against USC, and for the rest of their season. Junior running back James Montgomery, following surgery, is done for the year.

Montgomery underwent surgery Sunday morning for acute compartment syndrome in his left leg. The surgery was performed by Cougar team physician Dr. Ed Tingstad and will end Montgomery’s season.

Montgomery had been hampered by a knee injury since he rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in a 38-20 loss Sept. 12 against Hawaii.

Paul Wulff initially said Montgomery would miss the USC game, adding there were other injury issues with Montgomery, but he declined to disclose them in the morning press call.

Senior Dwight Tardy will start on Saturday with sophomore Logwone Mitz backing him up, said Wulff. Junior Marcus Richmond also might see playing time.
