COUGAR HEAD COACH Paul Wulff decided to unwind a bit after practice Thursday -- by driving north to take a first-hand look at two future Cougars who were duking it out in Greater Spokane League action. For the first time this season, the featured quarterback didn't throw for 270 or more yards, but he still looked sharp.

Two touted prospects who have committed verbally to WSU -- quarterback Connor Halliday of Ferris and tight end Aaron Dunn of Mead -- met under the lights of Joe Albi Stadium.

With Halliday firing for two TDs and 158 yards, Ferris prevailed 28-10. One of those TD passes came after Halliday, in mid handoff to a back on third down, could see the play unfolding disastrously and quickly pulled up to fire to Brendon Olson who then ran 33 yards for the score.

Ferris is now 2-1 on the season after dropping a nailbiter last week to Gonzaga Prep. Mead is now 1-2.

With just three games under his belt this season, Halliday already is on the verge of eclipsing 1,000 passing yards. He has 829 hashes and six TDs on 55-of-75 accuracy.

Halliday is rated the No. 7 quarterback prospect on the West Coast by Scout.com and is the No. 2-rated QB in the Pacific Northwest behind BYU-bound Skyline (Sammamish) signal caller Jake Heaps. Halliday is pegged at No. 39 among prep quarterbacks nationally. As a junior in 2008 he fired for more than 2,400 yards.

Dunn (6-6 1/2, 235) is rated by Scout.com among the top 300 high school senior football prospects in the land and is slotted the No. 8 tight end prospect in the nation. Shadle Park's Jake Rodgers, another Spokane product who has verbally committed to WSU, is rated the No. 31 tight end in the nation.
