BREAKING: Cougs land Cali corner

NEWEST COUGAR

HE'S ALWAYS THOUGHT Washington State a special place. His father was a standout defensive back for the Cougars back in the 70s. Dad made sure his son knew the program and school well. But things went to a different level after the young man sent his highlight tape to WSU coaches. They offered the corner, and other schools started to come running. Today, he made his decision and verbaled crimson.

It wasn't a difficult decision for Matt Simmons (6-0, 185) out of Bishop Montgomery in Torrance, Calif., to verbally commit after the Cougs offered him.

"I've grown up loving Washington State," said Simmons. "I love the environment up there. It's a good campus and I feel like I'm at home there, I've been going there for a long time with my dad."

Simmons' dad is Randal Simmons, a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team member who was killed in the line of duty in February of 2008. Simmons played corner for the Cougs from 1974-78 and made it to the final cut with Dallas before deciding to go into law enforcement.

Simmons sent his junior tape to Washington State in March. Things took off quickly from there.

"I called and emailed them at first. I sent them my highlight tape and that's how coach Steve Broussard started talking.

"They liked my attitude, commitment and dedication. They said I have good footwork and athletic ability," said Simmons.

In addition to Wazzu, Simmons was drawing interest from Hawaii, Arizona State, Idaho and others.

"Arizona State and Idaho came to my school and were talking about offering because they heard Washington State had offered me," said Simmons.

SIMMONS SAID Washington State likes him at corner but depending on how he fills out, they also think he would make a fine strong safety.

As a junior, Simmons racked up 41 solo tackles, most of them coming in run support, with 10 pass deflections, 1 interception and 1 sack.

"They didn't throw to my side very much," said Simmons, who earned second team all league honors in 2008.

Simmons also competes in the 100-m (10.8 hand held), 200-m, long jump (21-0.5") and 4x400 relay in track and field for Bishop-Montgomery.
