Update on Cory Mackay: 'Overwhelming' support
CORY MACKAY & JOE EPPELE
Posted May 13, 2009
THE PARENTS OF injured Washington State football player Cory Mackay expressed thanks Wednesday for the “overwhelming” amount of support they have received from Cougar fans and coaches. Here's the latest on his condition..
“There’s been hundreds of people here,” Donald Mackay said from Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. “They had a security guard up here for a while directing people.”
“The WSU coaches have been incredible,” Linda Mackay said. "They’ve been concerned and they’ve been calling." Donald said
was moved out of the intensive care unit Wednesday and is beginning three rehab sessions a day.
“He’s still numb below the waist,” Donald said. “He won’t be on his feet for rehab (initially).”
The Mackays remain hopeful that Cory will make a full recovery from spinal surgery.
Mackay, a promising freshman defensive end, was injured when his truck left State Highway 26 near Washtucna and flipped after he apparently fell asleep at the wheel last Thursday.
“The spinal cord is intact,” Donald said. “It was stretched and bruised a little.”
Donald said his son was encouraged when he “felt a tingling” when doctors were pushing his legs and feet.
“He’s handling this very well,” Donald said. “We’re very excited about the way he’s handling this, as are the doctors.
“Cory said, ‘I’m here to beat it.’ He’s not happy about the situation, but he said, ‘We’ll beat it.’”
Donald said Cory is looking forward to meeting former WSU football star Mike Utley, who has been paralyzed since he was injured in an NFL game in 1991. Linda said the support her son has received has proven “it is true” that the WSU football program “is a family.”
