NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Sixteen

DARLING for six

A WASHINGTON STATE alum received a good deal of press when the NFL Pro Bowl rosters were announced last week. Sadly, the attention was called to Detroit Lion kicker Jason Hanson due to his omission from the all-star squad.

Despite the fact that Hanson kicks for what may turn out to be the first 0-16 team in NFL history, his choice as the NFC's top kicker seemed to be a chip-shot. His 96 per cent field goal percentage is the best in the league (minimum of 20 attempts), with his only "miss" because of a block. And his perfect eight of eight field goals of 50 yards or longer is an NFL single season record.

Two other Cougar greats were also considered by many NFL experts to be having Pro Bowl caliber years. Atlanta free safety Erik Coleman's solid play for the resurgent Falcons could easily have earned him a trip to Honolulu, as could the special teams performance of Minnesota's Eric Frampton.

Here's how all of the NFL Cougars performed in week sixteen:

Hamza Abdullah, S, Cleveland, 4th season :Declared a healthy scratch for the Browns loss to Cincinnati.

Husain Abdullah, S, Minnesota, rookie: No recorded stats from Vikings' loss to Atlanta.

Alex Brink, QB, Houston, rookie: Did not play; assigned to the Texans' practice squad.

Mkristo Bruce, DE, Jacksonville, 2nd season: Declared a healthy scratch for Jags' Thursday loss to the Counterfeit Colts.

Michael Bumpus, WR, Seattle, rookie: Did not play; assigned to the Seahawks' practice squad.

Erik Coleman, S, Atlanta, 5th season : The Spokane native tallied four solo tackles and assisted on 2 more in playoff-bound Falcons' defeat of Minnesota.

Jed Collins, TE/FB, Cleveland, rookie: Did not play; reassigned to Browns' practice squad.

Devard Darling, WR, Kansas City, 5th season : Caught three passes for 69 yards and 1 touchdown in Chiefs' fall to Miami. Also recorded one special teams tackle.

Jason David, CB, New Orleans, 5th season: Notched his fifth interception of the season and posted one solo tackle in Saints' drubbing of Detroit.
