Cougs cut ties with incoming QB
The charges against Schmidtke include DUI and reckless driving, misdemeanor marijuana possession, minor in possession of alcohol and public disturbance.
Schmidtke verbally committed on the spot earlier this year, on January 4, when Washington State offered him a scholarship.
With a new no huddle offense and first year coaching staff at Washington State this season, the QB position was already going to be a priority for this upcoming ('09) recruiting class. With the Cougs and Schmidtke now parting ways, it becomes just that much more an important ingredient for this recruiting season.
Washington State has five scholarship quarterbacks on the current roster -- starter Gary Rogers (SR); No. 2 Kevin Lopina (JR); Cole Morgan (JR), Marshall Lobbestael, and J.T. Levenseller (FR).
Schmidtke according to reports is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
Schmidtke was named the Tacoma News Tribune's All-Area Player of the Year and to the Seattle Times all-state first team as a senior. He was also honorable mention AP all-state and had drawn on-field comparisons this past recruiting season to CouGreat Jason Gesser.
His senior campaign, Schmidtke completed an eye-popping 76 percent of his passes -- throwing for 2,724 yards, 37 TDs and 5 interceptions. He also rushed for 10 scores.
