TONY BENNETT

PLUG THE NAME TONY Bennett into a Google news search engine and it'll be days before you hit an entry about the singer who left his heart in San Francisco. Far and wide, the Tony Bennett of Pullman -- the Pullman where he's telling recruits he plans to stay -- is dominating the headlines. But there's still a little room for football, too.
here's a summary of what's out there, along with the links to the full stories ...
Tony tells recruits he’s staying in Pullman
Just when Washington State basketball fans exhaled with the revelation that WSU coach Tony Bennett was turning his back on Indiana, they had a new reason for concern when that job was filled Tuesday by Marquette coach Tom Crean.
The Seattle Times
Bennett would have shined at Indiana
OK, so Indiana basketball is no longer Indiana basketball. But it's still Indiana basketball — know what I'm saying?

Indiana not right fit for Bennett
Sure it looked like a perfect fit. The hot young coach had done wonders at once lightly regarded Washington State and now Indiana was calling. Yeah, Indiana. Part of college basketball's hierarchy, located in the heart of his Midwest roots and a place that could be his final stop. But Tony said no thanks. Tony is a smart guy.

”HOW DARE BENNETT!”
Interestingly, that's the tone I'm getting from a lot of feedback today on Tony Bennett's decision not to pursue the Indiana job. It's like people think that this incredibly difficult to believe. How could a second-year Division I head coach, with Midwest ties, turn down a program like Indiana?

Two factors behind Bennett’s rebuff of Indiana
Bennett is a basketball junkie. He loves the game and he loves coaching. Put emphasis on the word
coaching.
At WSU, alums and the media have their demands, but generally leave Tony free to do what he loves. At Indiana, the Xs and Os almost take a back seat to the publicity requirements of the job. And that's not worth the roughly $2.5 million they were offering.

Ferris star expects to play for Cougs
DeAngelo Casto, the Class 4A player of the year in boys' basketball, doesn't have a scholarship offer yet and has work to do academically but says he expects to play for Washington State next season.

ON THE FOOTBALL FRONT:
Double whammy for Cougs
It has been nearly five months since Paul Wulff accepted the position as Washington State's football coach, and two weeks since the Cougars began spring practice, and yet the sense lingers that even Wulff is uncertain what lies ahead.

New Cougars step up
Of course, there are the Cougars you've heard of: Gary Rogers, Brandon Gibson, A'i Ahmu, Dwight Tardy, Cory Evans. But there are new guys on this spring's Washington State football roster. And Washington State's new football coaching staff knows as much about the veterans as they do the rookies.
