WASHINGTON STATE head man Tony Bennett and Cougar players talk after the loss to North Carolina in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Tony Bennett
About Washington State’s overall performance…
That was not the way we wanted to go out, but I told the guys in the lockerroom, what a run for their careers, these two seniors (Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver) especially, and I’m thankful for that.

We played a heck of a team. They exploited our weaknesses. We’ll learn from it.

I want to talk about our seniors. These guys came in when nobody wanted to give us the time of day, and I’m thankful for that.

It was hard out there. I’m disappointed because we’re better than what we showed. North Carolina is excellent.

On North Carolina…
Transition defense has been our strength. It was our strength against Winthrop and Notre Dame. We made them shoot 43 percent as a team, but they keep coming at you. They’re good.

We didn’t represent the Pac-10 as well as we should. We did get shots. We did do things. They keep coming at you for 40 minutes. UNC is a special team. Their defense is better than people think. I was disappointed because we should have represented out league better than that.

On the Washington State seniors…
I’m going to miss them a lot. They’re like family. We took a chance on them, but they took a chance on us. They can play. A lot has been asked of them, and they have responded. They’re the foundation for us. They’ll be remembered forever in Pullman, Washington.

Senior Guard Derrick Low
On Tonight’s Problems…
I thought we were pretty good at transition defense, but tonight it was not so good.

About Going on a Roll…
Offensively I thought I got all the looks I wanted, and it was just hard to get it to drop. In most games, my team would be making shots. But tonight it just didn’t fall. Sometimes you have those nights.

On Last game/Being a Senior…
Like Kyle said, it was hard. It made me reminisce to the beginning. Injuries, and being last in the Pac-10, no one believed in us. Even though we lost, I want to thank Washington State for giving us a chance and believing in us.

Senior Guard Kyle Weaver
On Shooting…
It was freezing out there. I thought we got a lot of good looks. We drove and kicked a few times, and it just didn’t go in today.

About Last game/Being a Senior..
It’s hard right after you lose a game like that. To get where we are now, from being last in the Pac-10. It is pretty satisfying to look at it from a big picture. I think we could look back at this and say we left a mark at Washington State.

Senior Forward Robbie Cowgill
On what happened out on the court
They’re a good team. It’s kind of another level with a team like that. They’re physical and they got down on us sometimes in transition. I think we had some breakdowns defensively in the first half—I did myself. As a team ‘D,’ I think that hurt us some and we couldn’t but one out there. It seemed like we were getting the shots we wanted, they just weren’t going in.

Junior Center Aron Baynes
On defending Hansbrough…
I tried to stay between him and the basket. I tried to stay out of foul trouble. I knew he was going to score some points, but I tried to play the best I could on him. I got a couple calls against me, but Tyler did well.

About Tonight’s Problems…
We didn’t play team defense as well as we could. We needed to play good defense against a team like this, and that is something we didn’t do tonight.

Junior Guard Taylor Rochestie
On Danny Green changing the tone of the game…
That’s what makes North Carolina so dynamic—the fact that they sub like a hockey team. They’re bringing in new guys and there’s no drop-off. They’re the same guys, they’re just as good.

BENNETT AND CREW ENDURE FINAL MOMENTS OF 68-47 LOSS.
