ALL THE BUILDUP to the game is nearly over. It's time to see what happens when a stifling defense travels to the backyard of an offensive juggernaut to take on the pick of most to win the National Championship. The Cougs against the Tar Heels, in the Sweet 16.
The records:
Washington State
(26-8, No. 4 seed) vs. North Carolina (34-2, No. 1 seed).
Noteworthy:
It's been stated ad nauseum this week that Washington State is known for their defense while North Carolina's signature is their running offense and ability to score in transition and/or after made baskets. But two things to watch for will be if WSU is able to hold their own in the rebounding game and if Carolina has much success in their anticipated full court press against WSU. Forward Tyler Hansbrough is the National Player of the Year, averaging 22.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The Cougs held Winthrop and Notre Dame to a combined 81 points in the first two rounds but they can fill it up a little more than they're given credit for on the other end. The Wazzu offense averages 67 points per game.
Last time:
The two teams have never met.
At stake:
With a win, the Cougs move on to the Elite 8 to meet the winner of the Tennessee-Louisville matchup. Meanwhile, North Carolina is the odds on favorite to win the NCAA Tournament.
TV:
CBS, 4:27 pm PT.
High Definition broadcast?:
Yes, (1080i).

The line:
North Carolina by 8.5.
CF.C Prediction:
WSU 69, North Carolina 67
