NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Ten

ABDULLAH ASSISTS PAYMAH

HUSAIN WASN'T THE only Abdullah with a big game this weekend. His big brother Hamza made the most of his first professional career start, helping the Denver Broncos stop division rival Kansas City. The third year veteran may not have returned an interception for a touchdown as his lil' bro did for the Cougs on Saturday, but he did play a role in three Chief turnovers.

Here's how all of the NFL Cougars performed in week 10 and some AFL news, to boot:

Hamza Abdullah, DB, Denver, 3rd season : Making his first NFL start, he posted eight solo tackles in Broncs' 27-11 victory over KC. Also forced a fumble and deflected two passes that led to interceptions, one to fellow Cougar alum Karl Paymah (see photo).

Calvin Armstrong, OT, Washington, 3rd season:Did not play; assigned to practice squad.

Kyle Basler, P, Cleveland, 1st season: Did not play; on non-injury reserve.

Troy Bienemann, TE, Arizona, 1st season: No catches in Cardinals' 31-21 upset over Motor City.

Cody Boyd, TE, unsigned, rookie : Did not play; status unknown.

Tyron Brackenridge, CB, Kansas City, rookie : Recorded on solo tackle in Chiefs' 27-11 fall to Denver. Yes, that was a punch to the jewels Brackenridge levied on Bronco receiver Brandon Marshall to force him out of bounds. Marshall called the action unintentional and said he was apologized to afterward. Ty was likely just going for the ball…ba-da-dum.

Mkristo Bruce, DE, Oakland, rookie: Did not play; assigned to practice squad ..

Erik Coleman, S, New York Jets, 4th season : Did not play; bye week. Best the Jets have looked all season.

Devard Darling, WR, Baltimore, 4th season : Replaced Demetrius Williams as Baltimore's third receiver; caught one pass for 16 yards in Ravens' 21-7 fall to Cincy.

James Darling, LB, free agent, 11th season: Did not play; status unknown.

Jason David, DB, New Orleans, 4th season: The cornerback is getting the worst press in Louisiana since Katrina. Although posting seven solo stops, he was thrown at 11 times by St. Louis QB Marc Bulger with 9 of those going for completions and covering 140 yards. Oh, yeah, and 2 touchdowns. The Rams defeated the Saints, 37-29

Eric Frampton, S, Minnesota, rookie : No stats from Vikings' 34-0 ass-waxing by Green Bay. Left the contest during the first quarter with a groin strain. Brackenridge was nowhere in sight.

Steve Gleason, DB, New Orleans, 8th season: Out for season on injured reserve.

Jason Hanson, K, Detroit, 16th season : Attempted no field goals, but was true on all three PATs in Lions' 31-21 fall to Phoenix.

Jerome Harrison, RB, Cleveland, 2nd season : Declared inactive for Browns' 31-28 loss to Steely McBeam and company. Inactive?! That would better describe Cleveland's anemic running attack (40 net yards on the day) led by Jamal Lewis' 35 yard on 16 carries (2.2 avg. ypg) and two fumbles. Not to mention his highlight film 8 yards on 3 catches. Hey, but he can pass block!

Jason Hill, WR, San Francisco, rookie: No stats from 49ers' 24-0 Monday night loss at Seattle.

LINDELL'S GAME WINNER

Rian Lindell, K, Buffalo, 8th season : Connected on the game winning field goal with 46 seconds left—from 34 yards—to lead the Bills past hapless (and winless) Miami, 13-10.

Rien Long, DT, free agent, 5th season: The former Tennessee Titan and Outland Trophy winner auditioned with the New York Jets last week; status unknown.

Rob Meier, DE, Jacksonville, 8th season : Started but recorded no tackles in Jags' 28-13 victory against Tennessee Oilers.

Karl Paymah, CB, Denver, 3rd season : Posted three solo tackles and made his first career interception in Bronco victory.

Raonall Smith, LB, St. Louis, 6th season : Did not play; out for the season on injured reserve.

Lamont Thompson, DB, unsigned, 6th season: Did not play; had a tryout with Denver last week but was not signed. Should he be picked up by the Broncos, he would be third Cougar DB on their roster.

Marcus Trufant, DB, Seattle, 5th season : Posted two solo tackles in Hawk win against 49ers.

Cory Withrow, C/G, San Diego, 9th season : Started for the third time this season in place of injured Nick Hardwick in Chargers' victory over Counterfeit Colts.

In Arena football news, Cougar center/guard Nick Mihlhauser signed with the reigning AFL champion San Jose Sabercats. He joins fellow WSU alum Patrick Afif on the squad.

Elsewhere, defensive back Alex Teems, the leading tackler for the AFL2's Spokane Shock in 2007, has signed with Cleveland (formerly the Las Vegas Gladiators) of the AFL.
