Crimson Newswire: Be patient, Coug fans

EARLIER THIS WEEK, Spokane's Jared Karstetter, an ultra-athletic All-State wideout, broke the ice for Bill Doba, becoming the first verbal commitment in WSU's 2008 football recruiting class. Seattle P-I columnist Jim Moore took note. And with an assist from CF.C recruiting analyst Barry Bolton and others, he went about finding out if the lack of verbals at this stage should be a concern.

Besides Bolton, Moore consulted with Scout.com national recruiting analyst Allen Wallace, who told him, "Just because they've only got one verbal commitment doesn't mean they're not seriously in line to pick up 10 to 12 guys. If I were a Washington State fan, I'd be curious, but most of all I'd be excited about what's going to happen over the next three months ... I suspect a lot is going on under the radar that we can't see right now. Things are going to come together for that program."

COVER GUY DERRICK LOW

ELSWHERE IN THE NEWS, we head to the islands and Derrick Low's hometown, where the Honolulu Advertiser has taken note of the fact one of their own is popping up on newstands across the land.

"Like many basketball junkies often do at this time of year, Derrick Low used to scan the magazine racks at Longs or the local bookstore searching for the college basketball annual preview editions ..." the Advertiser writes. "But now, when Low goes looking for these basketball magazines, the image on the cover often is his own."

AND FINALLY, THE unthinkable has happened. Just two weeks after esteemed ESPN national basketball analyst Andy Katz trekked to Pullman to learn the secrets of Bennett Ball, comes Seth Davis of SI.com.

Pullman hasn't had this much national attention since Rich Steele sent Bill Walton hard to the Beasley floor one evening back in 1974.

Writes Davis, "When it comes to hoops hysteria, nobody would ever confuse Pullman with Lexington or Chapel Hill or Lawrence. That, however, is starting to change ..."
