NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Nine

JASON HANSON: 1,605 and counting

FORGET THE OVERHYPED New England-Indianapolis matchup. The NFL's ninth week featured a clash of Cougar titans: Hanson v Abdullah; David v Meier; Frampton v Withrow; Harrison v Trufant. Find out how these WSU alums and the rest of the Cougar greats performed in our weekly NFL recap.

Hamza Abdullah, DB, Denver, 3rd season : After spending much of the season on the inactive list with a hip-flexor strain, the free safety led the Broncos with seven total tackles (5 solo, 2 assists) in their 44-7 plummet to Detroit.

Calvin Armstrong, OT, Washington, 3rd season:Did not play; assigned to practice squad.

Kyle Basler, P, Cleveland, 1st season: Did not play; on non-injury reserve.

Troy Bienemann, TE, Arizona, 1st season: No catches in Cardinals' loss to Tampa Bay. Of course grabs were hard to come by as Phoenix QB Kurt Warner completed just 10 passes (not counting the two others he served up to the Bucs).

Cody Boyd, TE, unsigned, rookie : Did not play; status unknown.

Tyron Brackenridge, CB, Kansas City, rookie : Notched one solo stop in Chiefs' 33-22 loss to Green Bay.

Mkristo Bruce, DE, Oakland, rookie: Did not play; assigned to practice squad ..

Erik Coleman, S, New York Jets, 4th season : Did not start for the fourth consecutive week; posted one tackle in Jets'23-20 OT loss to Washington. On a positive note, his career will last longer than Eric Mangini's reign of lame as a head coach.

Devard Darling, WR, Baltimore, 4th season : No catches in Ravens' 38-7 Monday night massacre at the hands of Pittsburgh.

Jason David, DB, New Orleans, 4th season: Tallied eight tackles (6 solo, 2 assists) and picked off a pass in Saints' 44-21 win against J-Ville.

Eric Frampton, S, Minnesota, rookie : Notched one special teams tackle in Vikings' upend of San Diego.

Steve Gleason, DB, New Orleans, 8th season: Out for season on injured reserve.

1981 Topps Trading Card.

Jason Hanson, K, Detroit, 16th season : The reigning NFC special teams player of the week accounted for 14 of the Lions' 44 points in their shellacking of Denver. He was true on all five PATs and 3 field goals (from 43, 53, and 38 yards). His efforts moved his career points total to 1,605, passing former Lion kicker Eddie Murray(1,591) for the eleventh spot on the all time NFL scoring list. The Spokane native is also just the eleventh player to surpass the 1,600 mark in league history. "Yeah, it's the old-man milestone," the Spokane native said afterward.

Jerome Harrison, RB, Cleveland, 2nd season : No carries in Browns' 33-30 OT win against Seahawks. Why put The Ghost in with his 6.8 per run average when you have Jamal Lewis rushing for 37 yards on 20 carries?

Jason Hill, WR, San Francisco, rookie: No catches in his second regular season NFL game. Of course when Alex Smith is your quarterback…

Rian Lindell, K, Buffalo, 8th season : Responsible for 15 of the Bills' 33 points in their victory against Cincy. Was perfect on 4 field goals attempts (from 23, 21, 29, and 38 yards) and 3 extra point tries. His first PAT gave him sole possession of the NFL record for consecutive extra points to begin a career. He tied legendary 49er kicker Tommy Davis' mark of 234 last week.

Rien Long, DT, Tennessee, 5th season: Out for the season on injured reserve.

Rob Meier, DE, Jacksonville, 8th season : Posted two solo tackles in 44-21 fall to Orleans.

Karl Paymah, CB, Denver, 3rd season : Recorded two solo stops in Broncs' fall to Jason's Lions.

Raonall Smith, LB, St. Louis, 6th season : Did not play; out for the season on injured reserve.

Lamont Thompson, DB, unsigned, 6th season: Did not play; status unknown.

Marcus Trufant, DB, Seattle, 5th season : Recorded six solo tackles in Hawks' extra-innings fall to Cleveland.

Cory Withrow, C/G, San Diego, 9th season : Started for the second time this season in place of injured Nick Hardwick in Chargers' losing effort versus Minnesota.
