Football ticket sales on par with last season

WITH RENEWALS MOSTLY complete and the wait-list nearly tapped, Washington State reports that sales of Cougar season football tickets are almost identical to where they were last year at this point. That's especially notable, says sales director Dan Meyer, because the Apple Cup -- always an extra draw -- isn't in Pullman this season.

As of yesterday, WSU had sold 10,635 season tickets, compared with 10,708 a year ago at this time, a difference of less than 1 percent.

As the season opener nears, says Meyer, the tally should climb closer to 14,000. Last season, the final figure for season tickets was 13,777 -- the third-best showing in school history.

"Our wait list this year produced 385 season-ticket sales, up from 281 last year. That's a significant jump that could be a sign that there are even more new season ticket-holders out there," Meyer said.

"Based on where we're at right now, I wouldn't be surprised (if WSU exceeds last season's 13,777 mark)," he added. "It looks like the demand from new people is stronger than it was last year at this time. And we had a strong home schedule last year, including the Apple Cup."

"Usually, we have a significant dip in sales in a non-Apple Cup year. The numbers this week give me a pretty good feeling about where we're at as a program."

May, June and July historically produce a steady stream of additional sales, with August then spiking as football season looms, he said.

Meyer said it's always a benefit to purchase tickers now rather than later this summer so the buyer will have a greater choice in locating their seats.

"The program is getting more established ... and whether it's a non-Apple Cup year or not in Pullman, they want to be a part of it," said Meyer.

NOTABLE NOTES:
  • Tickets for the Sept. 8 Seattle vs. San Diego State will be sold exclusively by WSU until June 4 and then opened up to Ticketmaster. Meyers says there's a benefit to buying from WSU rather than waiting. "We don't sell out of the same block as Ticketmaster, and we make sure that we have the best available tickets in the house."

  • WSU's record for season ticket sales came in 2004, following three-straight 10-win seasons and a big win over Texas in the Holiday Bowl. Here's the top four years of Cougar season ticket sales:
    2004: 15,424
    2005: 14,619
    2006: 13,777
    2003: 12,815
