THE HONORS CONTINUE to pile up for Cougar freshmen Greg Trent and Fevaea'i Ahmu. The Sporting News has picked both to its Pac-10 All-Freshman team, and also named Trent a second-team Freshman All-American and Ahmu a third-team choice. The kudos follow on the heels of other national recognition for the pair.
Ahmu yesterday was named second-team Freshman All-American by Scout.com and Trent last week earned the same designation from CollegeFootballNews.com.
Trent, from Keller, Texas, and Ahmu, from San Diego, were both true freshmen in 2005.
Trent, a middle linebacker, played in all 11 games this season and started five in place of injured
Will Derting
. He posted 69 tackles, second-most on the team behind safety
Eric Frampton
. Trent (5-10, 230) had three tackles for loss, one sack, three pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He earned a Pac-10 player of the week nomination following his work against Oregon, in which he tallied a season-high 13 tackles (seven solo and two for loss) and recovered a fumble.
Ahmu , a 6-1, 284-pound defensive tackle, started all 11 games for the Cougars in the wake of
Ropati Pitoitua
’s leg injury. Ahmu posted 26 tackles on the season, including 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Ahmu was widely considered one of the marquee pick ups in WSU's last recruiting class; he was rated the No. 22 defensive tackle nationally by Scout.com and the No. 25 overall player in the state of California.
The post-season honors for Trent and Ahmu are among a plethora that have flowed toward the Cougars in recent days and weeks.
Foremost in that sterling line up is running back
Jerome Harrison
. He’s been named first- or second-team All-America by virtually every major service. His first-team AA nods in the last week by the Associated Press and the Football Writers’ Association of America --- two of the most prestigious panels in the land --- pretty much guarantee him the label “Consensus All-American.” In addition, Harrison finished ninth in Heisman Trophy balloting.
Harrison was one of eight Cougars selected for All-Pac-10 recognition. He was a first-team choice, while senior tight end
Troy Bienemann
, senior center
Nick Mihlhauser
, junior defensive end
Mkristo Bruce
and junior wide receiver
Jason Hill
garnered second team honors. Senior linebacker Will Derting, junior linebacker
Scott Davis
and sophomore wide receiver
Michael Bumpus
were named honorable mention.
The record-setting Hill, by the way, has been accorded second- or third-team All-America plaudits by several organizations.
