Listed on the depth chart as the first string fullback is Jed Collins, with Brandon Asuega-Stark backing him up. The Cougs implemented the two back set on occasion last year, and the formal inclusion of fullback on the depth chart signals a change in offensive philosophy at Washington State.
As far as youth goes, you might have to go back to 1991 and the rookie season of so many who would form the legendary Palouse Posse to find so much youth in an early season depth chart. Due to injury, two first year Cougs will be in the starting line up when Washington State squares off against Idaho Thursday.
True freshman defensive tackle Fevaea'i Ahmu, will start in place of the injured Ropati Pitoitua, who is out 6-8 weeks after breaking his fibula this past Thursday. JC transfer DeWayne Patterson (6-2, 195) will apprently get the nod at free safety for the injured Husain Abdullah (ankle.) And there's little doubt several other members of the class will make their presence known sooner rather than later.
Nine other first year Cougars are penned in on the depth chart's three deeps.
At center is Gig Harbor's Kenny Alfred (6-3, 285), arguably the state's top offensive line prospect last season.
DeMaundray Woolridge (5-8.5, 223) and Dwight Tardy (5-11, 230) are listed at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, behind starter Jerome Harrison.
Brandon Gibson is the No. 2 flanker behind starter Chris Jordan, and will also return kickoffs along with Bursey.
On defense, a trio of first year freshmen lock down the No. 2 spots at linebacker. Cory Evans (6-2, 215) checks in on the strongside behind starter Scott Davis. In the middle, Greg Trent (5-10, 235) is behind All-American candidate Will Derting while Jason Stripling backs up starter Steve Dildine on the weakside.
Checking in at left corner behind starter Alex Teems is the multi-dimensional Lorenzo Bursey (5-8, 175) out of West LA College, who will have three to play three.
Michael Willis is listed as No. 2 at free safety behind Patterson.
