PULLMAN -- What’s going on Coug fans? Cougfan.com asked me and Cody Boyd if we'd keep the Cougar Nation up-to-date on what the football team is doing this summer. So that’s what we're going to do, once a week, starting today. I'll be writing from my perspective on the defensive side, and Cody, a tight end, will write from his viewpoint on offense. As an aside, I find it fitting I submitted my story ahead of Cody's --- as we like to say on D, speed kills!

Note: Cody Boyd's installment will be published later today.

OK, on to some insight of what goes on with Cougar football in the three months before the season kicks off.

During the summer workouts, we split the team into four different lifting groups. The first group is in the weight room at 5:45 a.m. (that's not a typo -- yes, 5:45 in the morning.) We do this on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

We usually start off with a core lift -- like power cleans, pushpress, and squats. After the core lift, we then head outside to start our running drills.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, we usually do agility and cone work. After that, we go back inside to finish up our extra lifts, like shoulders and calves.

Mondays are a little different than the other days. Everyone lifts in the afternoon -- and instead of running with whatever group you're in, we all run together as a team. This way, we can all see each other working and getting better.

Another thing that we do during the summer is seven-on-seven drills. We call these skellies -- that's short of skeleton, because it's just linebackers and defensive backs vs. running backs, receivers, tight ends and QBs.

This is high competition between defense and offense.

Neither unit wants to lose, so everyone is trying hard. There is always some talking between the two, but at the end, we are all on the same team. And with the competition and the extra work, that’s what makes us better!

We have finals this week, so I’m keeping it short, but I’ll be back next week!

Go Cougs!
