What They're Saying: Ernie Kent at WSU

ERNIE KENT

REACTION TO THE hire of Ernie Kent as WSU's new hoops coach was wide and diverse. Two longtime columnists from the Pac-12 were diametrically opposed on his ability to recruit. And speaking of that, a signed recruit from WSU's incoming class, Tramaine Isabell, succinctly weighed in after his first contact with the new WSU coach.

@oTrillMaine: Nice talk with coach kent!
- WSU signee Tramaine Isabell

Oregon fired Ernie Kent because he didn't recruit well, hit a wall, even with Nike resources. At 59, he's gonna spring to life at Wazzu?
- Greg Hansen, Arizona Daily Star

I thought he recruited pretty well throughout. You don't get the Final Eight twice out of Eugene with bad players.
- Ken Goe, Oregonian

Coupled with Moos' hire of Mike Leach as football coach two years ago, this makes the Cougars the Home for the Jilted, Scorned and Rebuffed. But part of Moos' belief is that getting repudiated by his alma mater has sharpened Kent's desire to show the world he can still do it.
- Bud Withers, Seattle Times

Mostly, Moos is enchanted by Kent's ability to recruit – nationally, yes, but also Washington talents like Luke Ridnour and Aaron Brooks who ramrodded those Elite Eight teams. Terrific achievements that were surrounded by some undeniable underachieving.
- John Blanchette, Spokesman-Review

@JackTS14: Love the hire of Ernie Kent. Reminds me of Graveling, classy, passionate, articulate the makings of a great Coug! Way to go BMoos! #gocougs
- Jack Thompson

@jeffhiro: Good luck to Coach Kent as he becomes the coach at WSU. Wish u the best. Coug fans deserve success. Great fans. Sorry I did not do more.
- Former WSU and current Portland State assistant Jeff Hironaka

The hiring may not bring the headlines WSU got when Moos hired Mike Leach as his football coach, but Kent understands the situation he's inheriting.
- Tim Booth, Associated Press

Seventeen years ago, Bill Moos hired Ernie Kent as Oregon's men's basketball coach, and it resulted in five trips to the NCAA tournament, two conference tournament titles and one regular-season league title. Moos is now hoping that Kent can duplicate those results at Washington State.
- Lewiston Morning Tribune

The conference, the million-dollar salary and the charms of Palouse life notwithstanding, there was no "splash" out there to make. The Cougars have had exactly one of those in their basketball history, and that was a retired legend looking to set up his kid in the coaching business at a little bigger store than Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Ernie Kent is not chopped liver – he is, in fact, the second most-accomplished basketball coach the school has ever hired. But no one with a better resume was going to take this gig, and the same goes for more than a few with thinner credentials.
- John Blanchette, Spokesman-Review

Realistic hopes for a drastic turnaround are two years away at best, which means Kent has to work on accelerating the development of his incumbent players in addition to persuading promising recruits to join him. Finding some offensive firepower should be the first order of business, since the Cougars shot a horrendous 40 percent as a team in 2013-14.
- Matt Fitzgerald, Bleacher Report

Ernie Kent, who is somewhat familiar with Houdini escapes from his days coaching at Oregon, accepted a challenge of a similar magnitude, that of rebuilding the sagging Washington State men's basketball program.
- Bud Withers, Seattle Times

He's charismatic, articulate and can win the interview room. He commands attention. He recruits well, at least he did to Eugene, and can coach more than one style of play. For most of his tenure, his players did very well in the classroom.
- Ken Goe, Oregonian

Couldn't be happier for Ernie Kent who is going to be @WSUMensHoops next coach. He will be TREMENDOUSLY missed @Pac12Networks #GoCougs
- Michael Yam, Pac-12 Networks

It will be interesting to see how things progress and how quickly Kent can turn things around up north. His introductory press conference as Washington State's 18th Head Coach is Wednesday. (FYI: This is not an April Fool's Day Joke)
- Fansided, Justin Phillips

Congratulations to former Oregon coach and player Ernie Kent on getting the @WSUMensHoops job.
