UNDERGOES SURGERY ON SATURDAY FOR APPENDECTOMY

WSU MEN'S BASKETBALL broadcaster Bud Nameck made the announcement a few days after Christmas on Saturday night, but it was nevertheless a big 'ol helping of Bah Humbug for Cougar basketball fans. DaVonté Lacy, the Cougs' leading scorer and the biggest basketball bright spot this season, underwent an appendectomy on Saturday and is out indefinitely.

Though not official, DaVonté Lacy is expected to be out 7-10 days.

Washington State (6-5) is wrapping up non-conference play against Mississippi Valley State tonight. The Cougs play at No. 1 Arizona on Jan. 2 and figure to be without Lacy for the Arizona schools road swing.

How much will the Cougs miss Lacy?

He is scoring a team-leading 18.9 ppg on a squad that has struggled through their first 11 games. Only one other Cougar is averaging double digit scoring, (Royce Woolridge, 10.5). Lacy leads the Cougars in minutes (33.5), field goals made and attempted (67-139), 3-point percentage (41 percent) and field goal percentage (62 percent) and free throw percentage (77 percent).

So, yes, kind of a hard piece to replace. Ya think?

In addition to Woolridge, Que Johnson is likely to be asked to shoulder a good portion of Lacy's scoring load. Johnson is third on the team in scoring at 7.9 ppg despite coming off the bench.

Johnson got the start in place of Lacy against Mississippi Valley State, who did not get into town because of fog until 5 a.m. after playing the night before against the Huskies.

Johnson scored a career-high 21 points against UTEP last time out. Dexter Kernich-Drew's minutes (19.5) and attempts per game (6.4) also figure to increase.

The Cougs could also look to lean more on their frontcourt, where D.J. Shelton is averaging 6.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 26.2 minutes per game.

Against MVS, the Cougs' starting lineup was: Johnson, Woolridge, Drew, Shelton and Jordan Railey (16.5 mpg, 4.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg.)

Railey and Junior Longrus lead the team in personal fouls, with 29 each through 11 games. Railey has nine starts this season to Longrus' two.
