The latest from future Coug 4-star LB

CHANLDER LENIU

RECRUITING CAN SURE CHANGE fast. Chandler Leniu, a 4-star 'backer out of Bellflower, Calif., verballed to Washington State in September and spoke glowingly of all things crimson in the months that followed, including in an interview with CF.C earlier this month. But Cal offered late and he's been quoted as suddenly looking hard at Berkeley. Here's what Leniu had to say the day after Christmas…

Where do things stand for Chandler Leniu when it comes to WSU and Cal?

To be determined, says the St. John Bosco tackle magnet.

"I'm in the middle on both of them," said Leniu. "I love both… I'm just going to play it out."

That might take until late January. Leniu said he may take an official visit to Cal, with a probable date being the weekend of Jan. 24.

Scout.com generally doesn't list a verbally committed prospect as a "soft verbal" unless he has a firm visit date scheduled with another school. In-home visits don't begin again until Jan. 16 when the current month-long dead period comes to a close.

LENIU SAID the Cal coaches are "sending me a lot of love" with hand-written letters and touting the value of a Cal degree.

"And Washington State has a lot of things to offer, it's a really good school, they have a great degree program and the coaches are really great…I love the coaches there," said Leniu.

Leniu also said he had been in touch with WSU assistants Dennis Simmons (area recruiter) and Ken Wilson (linebacker coach) since the Cougs' bowl game.

LENIU SAID a "big plus" in considering Cal is the degree. One minus is that he envisioned himself spreading his wings and traveling further from home for college.

Leniu, who recently went from three-stars to four-stars in the scout.com rankings, racked up 228 tackles (152 solo) this season, as St. John Bosco capped a 16-0 season with a CIF Open Division championship over De La Salle. Leniu helped his team finish the season ranked No. 1 in MaxPreps' Freeman High School poll and No. 4 in USA Today's Top 25.

NOTABLE NOTE:
Leniu said he has been in touch some with Bellevue DL Marcus Griffin and while it would be great if they ended up going to the same school, they might also end up at different schools.
