VERBAL: 6-5 future OL from familiar school
Begg (6-5, 255), who was to enroll at Arizona State next month, tells Cougfan.com he has instead verballed to Washington State.
He may even be out on the Palouse tomorrow for his official visit if the logistics can be worked out. And he could also be another one of those early January arrivals.
He says he'll the plan is for him to line up on the same line as Riley Sorenson.
"I will be…maturing into an o-tackle over the years and I think that will be better for me than defensive line at Arizona State," said Begg.
And if he doesn't pack on the good weight and take to the o-line, then he says he'll line up at tight end for the Cougs and Leach.
What? Leach's Air Raid doesn't really feature a tight end.
But Begg tells Cougfan.com that WSU has talked to him about the possibility of their running more h-back, and/or more of a hand-down tight end at times and Begg may start out before transitioning to the offensive line.
"That's actually what they ran- Coach McGuire used to play this position at Texas Tech, an h-back, a hand-on-the-ground tight end… they hope to open up the run game more with that," said Begg. "The run game hasn't been as explosive (as they want) and I think that will really help that run game -- and that it turn helps the pass game.
"And then I'll eventually progress, if I gain the weight, develop, to the offensive line. That is the plan. And if I don't develop there and (gain the weight) then they'll probably keep me in that (H-Back role)."
BEGG SAID Washington State had ramped up their recruitment of him over the past month. Schools cannot oversign any longer beyond 25, so while Begg verballed to ASU last February and enrolled part-time at ASU this fall, his clock didn't start and there's no longer a binding component in the process, as there used to be with a signed LOI.
"Coach McGuire, I just think he's a good guy, a family man -- he's been with Leach forever," said Begg. "He knows what's expected and he's very comfortable coaching under Leach.
"I think (WSU) will be the best place for me to be successful and the plus is playing with River Cracraft and Riley from my high school," said Begg.
But Begg said he kept that part out of his decision and chose WSU on its merits rather than going to school with his two buddies. Still, it's a bonus.
"My parents didn't want me to use that in any part of my decision -- I'm good friends with Riley and River is one of the closest, closet friends that I have… But I tried not to use it in my decision process. But I'm pretty happy they're there," he said.
• Begg becomes the 16th known verbal commit for the class of 2014, joining OL Andre Dillard, S Darren Gardenhire, DT Ngalu Tapa, LB Chandler Leniu, OL Sean Krepsz, LB Frank Luvu, CB Joseph Turner, K Tristan Vizcaino, CB Kevin Griffin, WR Calvin Green, WR Keith Harrington, WR Zaire Andre, LB Greg Hoyd and QB Peyton Bender. Three more who delayed their enrollment at WSU from the 2013 recruiting class pool – CB Markell Sanders, CB Marcellus Pippins and BUCK/DL Dylan Hanser -- are expected to arrive in January, boosting to 18 the number of known future Cougs in the 2014 crop.
