Halftime: Cougs start strong, but get rattled

MASON SCORES

ATFTER 16 DAYS without a game, the Cougars came into Arizona Stadium looking ready to play – and did just that. But despite taking a fast 10-0 lead, the wheels started coming off with under a minute left in the first quarter, and they trailed 14-10 to Arizona going into halftime. Can they regroup in the second half and keep their bowl hopes alive?

The Cougars struck first, with junior running back Marcus Mason knifing his way into the end zone on a 15-yard run. The Cougs had positive yardage on all seven plays of the drive.

About five minutes later, senior Andrew Furney kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Cougars a 10-0 lead.

But Ka'Deem Carey took a 30-yard run into the end zone with 47 seconds left in the quarter, and suddenly the Cougs were missing tackles and looking sloppy.

Connor Halliday had looked good to that point but threw an interception to start the second quarter. But then, a fortuitous bounce. Washington State got the ball back on the ensuing play when senior Justin Segote recovered an Arizona fumble at their own 40.

Carey added a second touchdown on their next possession, on a 7-yard pass from B.J. Denker with 7:37 left, to take the lead.

Still, the Cougars were surprisingly effective at rushing in the first half, tallying 84 yards on 13 carries.

Arizona was unable to convert on a field goal to close out the half.
