What They're Saying: WSU-Idaho version

Posted Sep 22, 2013

DEFENSE AND POSTGAME HANDSHAKES. Those two things were most on the minds of writers after Washington State shut down Idaho 42-0. But with the Cougs moving to 3-1 on the season, there was a mention here and there of the Wazzu offense too…

It was the third straight game Connor Halliday had thrown for more than 300 yards and the eighth time in his career.

On this Homecoming night, it wouldn’t be a stretch to tab them 'The Magnificent Seven.'
Dane Bargabus on the WSU defense, Cougfan.com

It would have been hard to convince all but the oldsters in the audience that these two rural neighbors were once kindred spirits.
Bud Withers, The Seattle Times

The only thing that had Saturday’s Battle of the Palouse feeling like a rivalry were the choice words the two head coaches had for each other in the post-game handshake.
Sean Kramer, The Argonaut

Apples good, potatoes bad (at least in football).
Kevin Gemmell, ESPN

First there were last-minute fireworks between Mike Leach and referee Michael Batlan, resulting in a well-earned 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty… Batlan's field microphone was still on after he announced the penalty and he could be heard saying to another official “you heard what he said, right?”
Vince Grippi, Spokesman-Review

Throughout the week, Idaho coach Paul Petrino said in so many words that he was looking forward to facing a pocket passer after two weeks of dealing with dual-threat quarterbacks. Be careful what you ask for.
Troy Warzocha, Lewiston Tribune

For as sharp as the Idaho Vandals were in the first half last week in a near-upset of Northern Illinois, they looked bewildered and outmatched in the opening 30 minutes in 42-0 loss to the Cougars.
Josh Wright, Spokesman-Review

Gabe Marks caught 11 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the Cougars' 42-0 win over Idaho.
Ted Miller, in assigning an ESPN “Pac-12 helmet sticker” to Marks

Idaho Vandals Coach Paul Petrino runs over to WSU Coach Mike Leach and shakes his hand and runs away. Moments later, words are shouted and Coach Leach appears to say "I don't have a problem..." before being drowned out.

What makes the postgame even more interesting is Petrino lives in Pullman and is, according to more than one Pullman insider, building a house next door to Leach's residence… None of this should take away from the performance of the Cougar defense.
