Cougs hanging in after wild first half

WASHINGTON STATE HAD little difficulty moving the ball during the first half, but too many mistakes resulted in a 25-21 halftime deficit against Auburn on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium despite a lopsided crimson advantage in total yards and first downs.

The Cougars moved the ball for most of the first half as quarterback Connor Halliday – outside of a couple of interceptions – seemed to have a much better grasp of the Air Raid offense than a year ago.

Halliday completed 24 of 37 passes for 264 yards. WSU, which also struggled in the red zone last season, received a boost from Jeremiah Laufasa, who rushed for a pair of touchdowns.

But the Cougars also made their share of mistakes. Halliday's first interception translated into an 8-7 advantage for the Tigers when Tre Mason scored on an 8-yard run. The Cougars then relinquished a 14-8 lead when Mason scored on a 100-yard touchdown return.

Auburn's one-play success continued on its ensuing possession after WSU regained a 21-15 lead as Corey Grant scored on a 75-yard run.

The Cougars held a 283-176 edge in total offense and a 17-6 advantage in first downs.
