WSU will spend part of fall camp in Lewiston

IN A MAJOR change, Washington State will open their 2013 fall camp in Lewiston this year, two independent sources within the program tell CF.C. The Cougars will begin their second fall camp under Mike Leach on Aug. 2 and spend around 10 days in Idaho.

The reason for the early fall camp practices moving to Lewiston is primarily because construction has decreased the amount of practice space on the WSU campus. Only about half of Rogers Field is available for use. The spring session saw WSU run something of a split squad between Rogers and Martin Stadium in order to get all their work in.

But the sojourn to Lewiston will also serve as an opportunity for the Cougar players to form stronger bonds.

A number of other colleges in recent years have followed the NFL's lead, spending part of their fall camp schedule away from campus in order to provide a bonding experience and to allow for greater focus.

The Cougs are expected to stay in dorms on the Lewis–Clark State College but the school does not have a football team or football practice fields.

The WSU practice plan, one source told CF.C, is for the Cougs to use the practice fields at a local prep school. Note: Another source told CF.C after this article was first published that the Cougs would be practicing at Sacajawea Junior High.

WSU is expected to practice in Lewiston from Aug. 2 to around Aug. 11.

The official schedule from WSU, complete with dates and times, is not expected to be available until sometime next week.

CF.C will be making the drive to Lewiston each day for as long as the Cougs practice there, and as always we will be bringing you wall-to-wall coverage of the fall camp practice sessions.
