Breaking down Cougs' California offers

"USE CAUTION – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths." So reads the helpful note on Google in describing the 60-mile stretch between Los Angeles and San Bernardino. Based on the early recruiting data from the May Evaluation period in California, such obstacles don't seem to be a concern for the Cougars.

More than half the known offers extended by Washington State in the 2014 class are in California.

The two regions in California with the most WSU offers are found in the southern part of the state -- Los Angeles (21) and San Bernardino (9) areas.

The town with the most offers is Bellflower, about 20 miles outside of Los Angeles, with four.

All four prospects are from St. John Bosco High -- OT Damien Mama, corners Jaleel Wadood and Naijiel Hale and DE Malik Dorton. All have Wazzu offers and all are rated four stars.

Interestingly, all but two of the California recruits who are known to have been offered by the Cougs are rated three stars or better. That figures to be a fluid count, as WSU is likely to offer more under-the-radar types under Mike Leach over the course of the May Evaluation period and during its immediate aftermath.

There are five prospects in the San Diego area that have also been offered by the Cougars.

While the bulk of the Cougs' early offers are down south, the Cougs are also looking close to Berkeley -- four WSU offers have been made to recruits within 10 miles of Berkeley, and the number grows to five if you extend a 60-mile radius.

The Sacramento area holds three prospects with WSU offers, and Fresno also features a pair.

NOTABLE NOTES:
  • A school is allowed four of the six-plus weeks between April 15 and May 31, excluding Memorial Day and Sundays, to visit high schools and evaluate prep prospects.

  • During the May Evaluation Period, schools are allowed one on-field evaluation per prospect to assess athletic ability, and one more evaluation to assess a prospect's academic qualifications.
