How NFL journey began for Coug OL

PULLMAN -- For Cougar o-lineman Wade Jacobson, it was a nerve-wracking 24 hours following the draft. The uncertainty, the insecurity, the improbability -- it all had Jacobson an anxious mess. After a pain-staking night of thinking, his finally phone rang. The Washington Redskins wanted him, and he wanted the Washington Redskins.

All Jacobson wanted was a shot. The 6-6, 313 pound Hollister, Calif. native got one, and is ready to fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL.

“I couldn’t be happier than I am right now,” Jacobson told CF.C.

A day after the draft, Jacobson said his agent gave him a call -- a couple of teams were after him. But the Redskins had put an offer on the table, and they wanted the Coug in the nation’s capital.

“Waiting for that phone call, that was the hard part,” Jacobson said. “Just sitting around waiting for something you don’t know whether will come or not…”

As a guy who was on the bubble, Jacobson saw his stock rise a bit after turning in an impressive pro day in Pullman this March. His vertical put him in the top 10 percentile for offensive linemen, and a 40-yard dash just north of five seconds also contributed to a heightened awareness of the Subway sandwich lovin’ hogmollie.

Jacobson told CF.C he anticipates moving to the other Washington shortly.

“I was absolutely glued to my phone, just waiting and wondering,” Jacobson said.

While the Redskins and the District of Columbia will become Jacobson’s new place of residence, he noted the San Francisco 49ers had increasing interest in the former Coug as the hours dragged on, but nothing was every put on the table -- nothing was ever set in stone.

So Jacobson had a decision to make -- jump on an offer from the Redskins, or weigh his options with time and hope something materialized on the West Coast with the 49ers.

“I decided I didn’t want to let a good thing go,” Jacobson said. “The 49ers were definitely interested, but nothing was concrete. I didn’t want to let Washington go away, so I jumped on the ‘Skins.’

Jacobson will report to Redskins rookie mini-camp this week -- some reports say it begins Thursday, others say Friday -- to begin his NFL journey. An evaluation of Jacobson before the draft said he’s the kind of player NFL teams like to develop:

“Jacobson ran the 40-yard dash in 5.08 and 5.09 seconds. He had a 7.60-second three-cone drill and a 4.30-second short shuttle. Jacobson leapt 38 inches in the vertical jump and had a 9-foot-6 broad jump. He also had 22 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. This is the kind of player teams are looking for to populate a practice squad and allow to develop over time.” -- Gil Brandt,

There remains no word on whether Travis Long has found an undrafted free agent home. Long has declined to talk with media since the Apple Cup. He sent out a tweet late last Saturday that simply said "hakuna matata" (i.e, no worries); changed the center photo from one of him to one where he’s no longer uniform and his personal description no longer says nflbound. Whatever the coming days and weeks hold, best of luck to an all-time Coug.
