Lots of walk on happenings in Cougar football

Posted Mar 27, 2013

SOMETIMES THE PATH to playing college football comes via another position. Sometimes it comes from another sport. A player from Vancouver, Wash. has traveled both roads in his planned path to Washington State.

The Columbian recently talked to Seton Catholic's Erik Powell and he says he's coming to WSU later this summer as a preferred walk-on kicker.

Powell is a longtime soccer standout and was an all-state defender as a junior. He was also a wide receiver for Seton Catholic. His second cousin is Washington coach Steve Sarkisian.

Nick Daschel talked to Powell last October for Cougfan.com. He spoke about his first football practice ever:

“The coach kept moving me back, to the 30, the 35. I hit a 60-yarder. Granted, there was a lot of wind, but the coach said, “You could play Division I,’” Powell said. “After a while, I realized I could do this.”

The top two placekickers on the WSU roster are both seniors – Andrew Furney and Mike Bowlin. WSU has said they may spend scholarships on both a kicker and a punter this recruiting class, though Powell will have a lengthy audition period this year to try and make an impact on the Cougar coaches. Historically, most kickers at Washington State arrive as walk-ons before eventually earning a scholarship.

ANOTHER WALK ON who has yet to make his decision is Interlake High's Ryan Turman. He was planning to walk on at UW but that’s no longer in the cards. Turman said he has three schools he’s now primarily deciding between – Washington State, USC and Idaho.

“I'd say USC and Wazzu are tied right now as my leader. I'm still considering those other schools, but those two stand out to me the most right now," he said.

Turman, who plans on making his decision sometime in April, was a three year starter at receiver for Interlake and also saw some time at CB his senior season.

Ryan Turman senior highlights:

THE WSU SPRING ROSTER listed a number of new walk ons to the program who are getting their first taste of Cougar football.

OL Andy Agen (6-2, 260) comes from Burlington High in Skagit County. He played center, d-line and a little fullback his senior year in 2011. He originally planned to accept a scholarship at Air Force but is instead now at Washington State.

RB Chris Boachie (5-8, 196) is a sophomore running back who comes to WSU from Broomfield, Colo. He looks to be giving the game another go, having been in the Class of 2010 out of Arvada West High.

LB Rahmad Gholston (6-0, 215) out of Tacoma’s Spanaway Lake High is an all-around athlete, having also competed in track and field.

OL Cole Morgavi (6-0, 263) walked on at WSU out of Saddleback JC. He was an all-state lineman his senior prep season in Nevada. S Miles Edwards was also walking on out of Saddleback but is no longer on the WSU roster.

WR Willie Roach (6-1, 187) out of Federal Way has some hops, clearing 6-5 in the high jump as a prepster. Other personal bests include 11.22 in the 100 meters and 22.36 in the 200m.

WR Adam West (5-11, 160) out of Mount Vernon was a multi-sport prep standout who redshirted this past football season at NAIA powerhouse Carroll College in Montana. West is said to have good speed and an accomplished route runner.

NOTABLE:
Familiar faces with eligibility remaining who are no longer with the Cougars include Cody Clements, Brandon Golden, Khalil Pettway, Justin Clayton and Drew Loftus.
