WSU's Scoring Pantheon

WSU's Scoring Pantheon

IT'S NO COINCIDENCE that two of the five most prolific scorers in Washington State basketball history arrived there under head coach Ken Bone. Brock Motum entered the career top five on Saturday, nudging by Mark Hendrickson into fifth and joining old teammate Klay Thompson, who finished his WSU career at No. 3 on the all-time list behind Isaac Fontaine and Steve Puidokas.

A look at Bone's history as a head coach at WSU, Portland State and Seattle Pacific points to a clear trend line: He likes to have a go-to scorer and constructs his offenses accordingly.

Thompson averaged 12.5 points per game as a freshman the year before Bone arrived. And then he averaged 19.6 and 21.6 points, respectively, the next two seasons.

With Thompson's departure, Motum stepped into prime time. He went from averaging 7.6 points per game as a sophomore to 18.0 last season and 18.4 this season.

The result is that WSU has valuted an unprecedented two players into its all-time top five for scoring in the span of three seasons.

Motum will need either the Mother of All Games against the Dawgs on Wednesday or a deep Cougar run in the Pac-10 tourney this week to move into fourth place on the all-time Cougar list. But facts are still facts: Whenever he concludes his Cougar career and with however many total points he has, he ranks among the best of the best in WSU history.

HERE'S A VISUAL GUIDE TO THE 16 GREATEST SCORERS IN WSU HISTORY (it was going to be the top 15, but since No. 16 was one of the most unforgettable three-point shooters we've ever seen, we made this a top 16 rather than 15) ...
