NEWS OF Aron Baynes’ seemingly imminent signing with the San Antonio Spurs provides encouragement for more than a dozen other former Washington State basketball players who are playing professionally around the world.

One of the most prominent former Cougs overseass, point guard Taylor Rochestie, has joined Angelia Biella in Italy after arranging for his release from Caja Laboral in Spain. Rochestie, who led Le Mans to the French national title game last year, saw limited playing time in Spain. He was averaging 6.1 points and 2.6 assists in league play.

Thomas Kelati continues to perform well in Spain. He’s averaging 11.4 points and 1.1 steals with Valencia in league games.

Josh Akognon, who played with the Dallas Mavericks in the preseason, ranks third in scoring in China’s top league with a whopping 31.1 points per game. The 3-point gunner, who finished his college career at Cal State Fullerton, averages 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals.

Former Oklahoma City Thunder swingman Kyle Weaver has performed well since being activated by the Austin Toros in the NBA Development League. In five games, Weaver has averaged 12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals.

Faisal Aden, whose senior year at WSU ended at midseason last year due to major knee surgery, was released by the NBADL’s Texas Legends without playing in a game. Earlier, he failed a physical with a Belgium team.

Derrick Low continues to struggle from 3-point range (27.9 percent) in Ukraine, but he’s averaging 15.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

Veteran overseas player Marcus Moore averages 16.7 points, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals in Israel. Ivory Clark, who plays in Israel’s No. 2 pro league, averages 12.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots.

DeAngelo Casto is racking up 9.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in South Korea. Thomas Abercrombie averages 9.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in Australia.

Fabian Boeke, playing in his native Germany, averages 11.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. Abe Lodwick is hitting 42.3 percent of his 3’s while averaging 7.6 points and 3.8 rebounds as a pro rookie in Germany.

Two other first-year pros from Washington State, Marcus Capers and Rosie Adzasu, continue to dominate in Finland.

Capers, a springy guard, averages 16.0 points, 11.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks. Adzasu is still making far too many turnovers (5.2), but she averages 18.4 points, 3.7 assists and 4.4 steals.

Ezenwa Ukeagu is listed on the roster of CA Bizerte in Tunisia, but no statistics could be found for him.

Meanwhile, in the NBA, Klay Thompson remains a key starter on the revived Golden State Warriors. After making the NBA All-Rookie team last year, Thompson has improved his stats in points (15.9), rebounds (4.0), assists (2.6) and blocks (0.9).
