Is Marquess Wilson gone?

MARQUESS WILSON

PULLMAN – There were differing accounts coming out of the Palouse on Monday morning as to Marquess Wilson's status and future with Washington State...

"Marquess Wilson has been suspended for violation of team rules," was the official word from WSU Sports Information on Monday morning.

But according to two sources close to the Washington State football program who asked not to be identified, the leading wide receiver for the Cougs has cleaned out his locker and quit the football team.

The Cougs cancelled "practice" Sunday but instead held a "conditioning" event. According to one source, the football team then went through a "hellish" workout Sunday night that spurned the explosive playmaker to quit the session, gather his belongings from his locker and walk out. (The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reported that Wilson quit 20 minutes into the session.)

Another CF.C source confirmed Wilson's departure, adding that some players are "pretty upset" but that most of them remain optimistic the "team will be able to pull through."

Wilson, the leading pass catcher for the Cougs with 813 yards on 52 receptions, has numerous time since the spring come under criticism from Mike Leach for his work ethic and attitude.

Wilson recently lost his starting job the past two weeks in favor of Dominique Williams after he had "outperformed" Wilson in practice, though Wilson has continued to play significant turns in games.

Whether there will be a reconciliation remains to be seen. Leach holds his weekly press conference later this afternoon, check back on CF.C for the latest developments.

If Wilson has indeed seen his last day with the program, it brings to at least 18 the number of scholarship players who have left the program for various reasons since Leach came on board (such as injury, dismissal, player choice, etc.) The others are Blair Bomber, Spencer Waseem, Tyrone Duckett, Matt Simmons, Lenard Williams, Dan Spitz, Anthony Laurenzi, Jordan Pu'u-Robinson, Ian Knight, Aaron Dunn, Sekope Kaufusi, C.J. Mizell, Louis Bland, Alex Reitnouer, Skylar Stormo, Max Gama and T.J. Poloai.
