WSU head man Ken Bone landed PG Ikenna Iroegbu last week for his first commit of the 2013 class, but is still working around the clock to add another player to that list. Last week Bone was in California to meet with an intriguing shooting forward/combo guard prospect who recently decommitted from an Ivy League school.

The 6-5, 195-pound Noah Allen tells CF.C he has developed a good relationship with the coaching staff at WSU and is hoping to visit Pullman as soon as possible.

Allen, a 3-star prospect from Palma High in Salinas, Calif., committed to Harvard in July, but opened up his recruitment last week due to financial concerns with attending Harvard and Washington State is among the colleges who jumped in head first to try and land his services.

“I really like Washington State,” Allen said. “I’m trying to schedule a trip to Pullman as quickly as possible and I want to make sure to visit there within the next few weeks so I can check out the campus.”

Bone traveled to Salinas on Friday to visit with Allen to talk about his potential future in a Cougar jersey. It was a visit that Allen said he enjoyed.

“Coach Bone is a really cool guy,” Allen said. He’s kind of like me. We’re both mellow guys and we’re able to talk to each other.”

In addition to his relationship with Bone, Allen said the bond he and assistant coach Curtis Allen have developed is another reason why WSU is among one of his favorites. Coach Allen will travel to Salinas on Monday to visit with the sharp shooting forward.

“Coach Allen is a great guy and we text every day,” Allen said. “The relationships I build with the coaches is definitely going to be one of the deciding factors on where I go, as well as the opportunity to play in my first year.”

Allen said the WSU coaches are looking at him as a combo guard, where he will play both the ‘2’ and the ‘3’. He averaged 18 points per game as a junior and said he feels he can excel at both positions at the next level.

“I’m fine handling the ball and I’m comfortable at both spots,” Allen said. “I just want to play where I can make a contribution in my first year. That’s all I want, just the opportunity to play as a freshman.”

In addition to Washington State, Allen holds offers from Utah and Santa Clara. Boston College, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Washington and Arizona State are also showing increased interest.

On top of his work on the hardwood, Allen is also a superstar in the classroom. He reports a 3.9 GPA and said academics will also be a key factor in his decision.

“That’s still something I want to keep in mind,” Allen said. “Academics are very important to me and I’m looking for the best fit.”

Allen said he hopes to sign with a school during the early signing period in November, but may wait until the spring to make his decision. He was named the 2012 Monterey County Player of the year by the Salinas Californian.

Notable note:

Allen decommitted from Harvard for financial reasons. Allen said he received his financial aid pack from Harvard and found out his expenses would be over $60,000 per year. Because of the high cost to attend the Ivy League school, Allen and his family explored options to afford the payments, but came to the conclusion that they simply could not afford it.

“I was disappointed because I felt like I found the right fit,” Allen said. “I talked with the coaches and they told me they really wanted me to come play for them but they understood there was really nothing that could be done. It was out of their hands really.”
