Pac-12, DirecTV, Comcast off to rough start

Posted Aug 30, 2012

THINGS SURE HAVE changed when it comes to the Pac-12 Networks and DirecTV. Comcast, too. Earlier this month, Gary Stevenson, the President of Pac-12 Enterprises, told CF.C the discussions with DirecTV were “very positive” and he anticipated a deal would get done. But on Wednesday, the Pac-12 Networks issued a letter urging fans to find “another television provider.”

  • Of course, with *five conference games on the Pac-12 Network between today and Saturday, it’s likely too late for those with DirecTV to find another provider who would get them set up in time to see the Week 1 games.

(*Oregon State’s scheduled game against Nicholls State that was also to be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks has been postponed due to weather conditions in Louisiana.)

Here’s the Pac-12’s open letter to subscribers of DirecTV: ”Dear Fan”.

Meanwhile, there’s also a hiccup for Comcast customers who want to watch all of the games online that aren't on their regional channel.

Comcast customers are now being told "access to live streaming on Pac-12.com and through the Pac-12 mobile apps is not available at this time for Comcast Subscribers" -- and that it is not scheduled to be available on Comcast until sometime in September (assuming of course the goal posts don’t get moved on customers again.)

So one of the big selling points that’s been made repeatedly over the past several months – that if a customer’s TV provider offered at least some of the Pac-12 Network channels, that those customers would then also have online access to ALL of the Pac-12 channel feeds – isn’t happening at the nation’s largest cable provider.

And of course all this assumes that your Comcast is carrying the Pac-12 Network in the first place.

For those Comcast customers who live outside the Pac-12 regional footprint -- such as in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Dallas, Washington D.C., etc. -- Comcast is not offering the Pac-12 Network to their customers.

Even if you're willing to pay extra as a Comcast customer in these areas, even if you want to log in and watch online only, -- sorry, if you live outside the Pac-12 markets, you're basically being told by Comcast to go pound sand.

Most people anticipated growing pains for the fledgling Pac-12 Network and their television/online partners. Now that they’re actually here, though, the backlash involving DirecTV, Comcast and the Pac-12 Networks is sure to grow.

Games on the Pac-12 Networks in Week 1, all times PT:

    THURSDAY
Northern Colorado at Utah; 4:00 PM
Northern Arizona at Arizona State; 7:30 PM

    FRIDAY

    SATURDAY
    Nevada at Cal; 12:00 PM
Postponed; Nicholls State at Oregon State
San Diego State at Washington; 7:30 PM

The Cougs' second game of the season -- Saturday, Sept. 8 at 12:00 p.m. against Eastern Washington -- is scheduled to be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
