A POST-SPRING DEPTH CHART was released by Washington State this week for Pac-12 Media Day. Keep in mind it doesn’t list any of the new arrivals, such as WR Gabriel Marks and NT Ioane Gauta for example, who are expected to challenge for playing time when fall camp gets underway Aug. 2. Still, it does yield plenty of intriguing data, starting with walk-on wide receiver Bennett Bontemps.
Bontemps headed into fall camp is atop the depth chart at the H-receiver position, the slot position on the left side. The H-receiver is where WSU inside receivers coach Eric Morris played under Mike Leach at Texas Tech – clearly Bontemps impressed his position coach during the spring.
Bontemps, out of Rogers High in Puyallup, walked on at WSU in 2010 and has lettered both years in a Cougar uniform. The bulk of his contributions have come via special teams but he’s steadily earned increasing praise for his receiving work on the practice field, both under Mike Leach and the previous staff.
Bontemps is likely to have his hands full holding onto the No. 1 H-receiver job, however. In addition to the players listed behind him on the chart, senior Gino Simone and Blair Bomber, the Cougs welcomed three new wideouts to the mix in June, all of whom could find a home in the slot – Gabriel Marks, Brett Bartolone and Alex Jackson. Marks has already drawn rave reviews from Jeff Tuel in a recent CF.C article about the summer. Rahmel Dockery, who arrived in January, is also a slot candidate.
Beyond Bontemps, WSU lists one extra position on their starting offense for a total of 12. The extra position – BH – corresponds to when WSU runs, for example, a jumbo package. Redshirt frosh Max Hersey is the starter there. So what does BH stand for? Believe it or not, it means “Big H” receiver, WSU SID tells us.
ELSEWHERE ON THE offensive chart, Marquess Wilson, Andrei Lintz and Kristoff Williams are the No. 1s at the X, Y and Z receiver positions, respectively. The starting o-line consists of LT John Fullington, LG Wade Jacobson, C Matt Goetz, RG Dan Spitz and RT Rico Forbes.
Jacobson missed a large portion of the spring as he recovered from surgery -- and was held out of all contact situations -- so being listed as the post-spring LG starter underscores his importance to the 2012 Cougar o-line. Spitz, the starting right guard, is also listed as the No. 2 left guard, which also tells you a little about his value.
Jeff Tuel is the No. 1 QB, and the running back position lists Rickey Galvin “or” Carl Winston as the starter.
OVER ON DEFENSE, Washington State doesn’t list a defensive end in their 3-4.
Starting at right tackle is Xavier Cooper and the nose tackle is Kalafitoni Pole. The depth chart became dated yesterday afternoon at the left tackle spot, when Anthony Laurenzi was dismissed from the team. A quick glance at the weights on the depth chart show they've been been updated from last year’s roster – Cooper, for example, is pushing three bills, listed at 298. That’s 20 pounds more than he was listed at last season.
He's not the top gainer, however. That distinction belongs to Logan Mayes, who added 23 pounds. Another player who added some serious poundage was Tana Pritchard, who stacked 20 pounds onto his 6-3 frame.
The weights listed on the depth chart were taken just a few weeks ago, WSU SID tells Cougfan.com, so they're fairly representative of the players headed into fall camp.
AT LINEBACKER, the starters are Travis Long is at BUCK, Eric Oertel at SAM, Darryl Monroe at MIK and Chester Sua at WIL.
Atop the defensive backfield depth chart are Daniel Simmons and Damante Horton at corner, with Deone Bucannon at strong safety and Tyree Toomer “or” Casey Locker at free safety.
The special teams listings have Mike Bowlin as the starting punter, kickoff specialist and the No. 2 placekicker. Andrew Furney is the starting placekicker, with David Gilbertson the holder and Zack Koepp “or” Alex Den Bleyker doing the long snapping.
Kickoff returns feature Dockery and Galvin, with the punt returner Leon Brooks “or” Galvin “or” Dockery.
