GORGEOUS SKIES and nearly 11,000 fans welcomed Mike Leach and his Washington State Cougars to Spokane today for the Crimson & Gray Game. The bright spots were numerous. Jeff Tuel completed 19 of 21 passes for 285 yards and two TDs -- including an 84 yarder to Marquess Wilson to launch the proceedings -- despite consistent pressure from a defense that exploited a banged up offensive line.

Sophomore-to-be defensive end Logan Mayes was on fire from the first whistle and concluded just the first half with an unoffical 4 1/2 sacks.

TRAVIS LONG BRINGS DOWN CARL WINSTON

Mike Bowlin, a JC transfer and former Oregon Duck, may have been the most pleasant surprise of the day, though. In a progam whose special teams have struggled in recent years, his deep kickoffs and high hang-time punts were a revelation.

CF.C will have full coverage later, but other quick observations from today include:

  • As advertised, the Air Raid offense attacked the entire width and length of the field. Marquess Wilson was Mr. Vertical and Bobby Ratliff Mr. Possession. Tuel very, very sharp. He threw across the middle, early, late, dump offs, scrambles. He did it all.

  • In the first half, the Cougar offense typically took between 25 and 36 seconds to go from tackle to the next snap.

  • Marquess Wilson and Dominique Williams had huge receiving days. They combined for 9 catches, 300 yards and 2 TDs

  • The defense showed multiple looks up front and sprinkled in blitzes.

  • Biggest hit of the day: Linebacker Jared Byers on a Marcus Mason bubble screen. Tracy Clark got there first and then Byers unleashed.

  • Slot receiver Andrei Lintz, who had a whale of a spring, looked sharp today -- but there was one play that he'd like to do over. David Gilbertson threw a pass behind him and Lintz made a great catch. He then showed off his speed, running downhill to the end zone -- but he didn't tuck the ball and Daniel Simmons -- or was it Deone Bucannon as some in the press box thought? -- tomahawked it out at the 1-yard line.
