Cougs land verbal from Texas safety

IN THE AGE of social media, who needs to talk directly with someone to verify what you're hearing through the grapevine? After hours of trying to locate and then get ahold of Trevor Walker, the young man makes his way to the Cougfan.com Twitter account (@COUGFANcom), clicks the follow box and then posts a note identifying himself as an NF (new face) in the CF.C world. Welcome to recruiting 2012.

A quick look at his Twitter account pretty well endorses what Jake Worthen at Scout.com was on the trail of earlier today: the 6-1, 190-pound defensive back has verbally committed to play ball at Washington State.

Worthen did eventually reach Walker. "I committed to Washington State,” Walker said. “I verballed Thursday night.”

Walker was not available for full comments, but did give his reasons for committing via text message.

“I’m ready to help turn the program and the culture around at WSU,” said Walker. “I love what coach Leach was able to do out here in Texas and I just want to be a part of something good. I also like the family environment."

As a junior this past season, Trevor Walker racked up 89 tackles, 17 pass break-ups and five interceptions. He was named first-team 5A All-District.

His prep coach at Mansfield Timberview High in Arlington is Mark Walker, a one-time Oklahoma State tight end who was teammates with Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas.

Walker is the first verbal commit for the Cougars in the 2013 recruiting cycle, and is one of the earliest in Cougar history.
