Is this Mike Leach's new D-Coordinator?

MIKE LEACH & BOBBY JACK WRIGHT coached together one year. Are they about to be reunited again, this time on the Palouse? Sometime after Oklahoma won the Insight Bowl over Iowa, the rumors began to flow that the Sooners' assistant defensive coordinator was retiring or being reassigned within the Oklahoma ranks. Now, a new report has the him coming to WSU as Leach's defensive coordinator.

Steve Kelly of the Seattle Times via Bob Condotta on Twitter reports: "Times columnist Steve Kelley doesn't Tweet, so it's left for me to pass along rumor he heard at Fiesta Bowl - Oklahoma's Bobby Jack Wright.."

Neither Kelly nor Condotta sourced or attributed the tweet.

There had been speculation among fans and media since the Insight Bowl a change might be afoot when Wright was the only coach to receive a Gatorade victory bath by players. Mike Stoops has been mentioned as likely returning to Oklahoma under brother Bob Stoops since the younger Stoops firing at Arizona.

Wright, 61, has been at Oklahoma since 1999. And he has worked with Leach before.

Leach also coached at Oklahoma in 1999, as Bob Stoops' offensive coordinator. The next year, Leach became the head coach at Texas Teach.

For the past two seasons, Wright has been assistant head coach, assistant defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach for the Sooners. From 1999-2004 e coached Oklahoma defensive ends and was the recruiting coordinator. He held the titles of assistant head coach, assistant defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 2005-09.

His previous coaching stops include Texas, North Texas, Texas A&I and high school ball in Texas.

Wright has coached in 17 bowl games.

UPDATE: Mike Leach on Tuesday afternoon in a Seattle Times chat said the defensive coordinator search remains ongoing.

"I have several names in mind, which I'm not going to reveal. We expected to get that completed by the end of the AFCA Convention. I think that's Jan. 8-12."

Asked when the full staff would be announced, Leach answered...

"I think about the time I mentioned earlier, mid-January. After the coaches' convention." Recommended Stories
