Bellevue lineman will vist WSU Jan. 13

GOOD FEET, STRENGTH, athleticism and technique are all important traits in an O-line prospect. And so are two qualities that often receive short shrift in comparison to others -- intelligence and the ability to learn. One prospect in Mike Leach's spyglass, Bellevue's Jake Eldrenkamp, has those bases covered.

Eldrenkamp (6-5, 295) is weighing a career in the Pac-12 vs. the Ivy League. Leach offered the Bellevue roadgrader this month and his official trip to WSU is slated for Jan. 13.

"WSU liked my academics, test score and GPA (3.98). They know they would be getting a smart player," said Eldrenkamp, whose offers besides WSU include Oregon State, Utah, Purdue, the UW as of this week, and Ivy schools Pennsylvania, Yale and Brown. "And they liked my power off the ball, too."

BELLEVUE RUNS THE old-time wing-T offense, which is a long country mile from the Air Raid Leach is bringing to Washington State.

"With Washington State, it's almost a completely opposite scheme, just in terms of pass blocking vs. the wing-T. But they can see they my skills would translate well," said Eldrenkamp.

ELDRENKAMP SAID he's talking to Washington State and Penn most these days, the latter of which of course has the prestigious Wharton School of Business. And that's a very real possibility for Eldrenkamp.

"They won the past two Ivy League championships," he noted.

Wazzu, however, has its draws too, including distance, said Eldrenkamp.

"And it's definitely cool having Sam Flor committed there," said Eldrenkamp of the O'Dea lineman and future Cougar. "I've worked out with him for three years, we're good friends.

"Ive been talking to coach (Eric) Russell and others at Washington State and they seem like really good guys. I think it's a really good program."
