Klay grabs big $, but still a rook

KLAY THOMPSON became a multimillionaire Tuesday, but that doesn't mean the former Washington State basketball star won't be subject to the traditional NBA rookie ritual of carrying a goofy-looking children's backpack filled with snacks and other items that his Golden State teammates might want on command.

"If I'm in Oakland with that on, don't hate; I can't help it," Thompson joked with the media.

Thompson signed a four-year, $10.4 million contract, according to the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times. Only the first two years are guaranteed, and Thompson will make slightly less than $2.2 million this year, the Times reported.

"Signing a contract, that was a monumental moment in my life," Thompson said. "I've been dreaming of that my whole life."

Thompson, the son of former NBA star Mychal Thompson, grew up around NBA players. He bypassed his senior year of college to enter the NBA draft this season, and he was drafted 11th overall.

New Golden State coach Mark Jackson said Thompson is "a big-time talent" who will play "right away. There's no question about it. He's that good."

"Mark Jackson saying something like that is just real humbling," Thompson said.

Thompson, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard, appears set to open the season as one of Golden State's top reserves.

"A lot of kids get drafted and they have to sit a year, a year and a half," Thompson said. "If I can do that (play a key reserve role right away), that'd be very special."
