THE MEDIA and message board fire directed at Washington State head coach Paul Wulff has not gone unnoticed among the high school seniors who have verbally committed to play for the Cougs next season. Cougfan.com talked with three of them, including quarterback Austin Apodaca, to get their take on it all.

“My thoughts are the same as they were going into the season, that they’re a really young group,” said Apodaca, who verbally committed to the Cougars back in June. “And I have complete faith they’re going to turn things around.

“I know all the recruits I talk to are with me on that, too. We also want to help the future of the program and we want to be a part of it of what’s going to come.”

How does he know that about the rest of the class?

Apodaca, out of Colorado’s Silver Creek High, has been busy forging relationships within the recruiting class, which currently numbers 17 known commits, since he went crimson.

“I’ve been in touch with all of them. I talked to Denzell (Dotson) the other day, I talked to David (Bucannon) the other day, I talk to all of them,” said Apodaca. “It’s obviously tough to see all the things in the media and the people- bashing things, the negative things. You’re going to have the haters, it’s going to come and you can’t stop that, but I definitely think we’re going to turn it around.

“Me and all the other recruits have faith in Coach Wulff and the staff at Washington State.”

Apodaca said he talks to offensive coordinator and Todd Sturdy on a weekly basis, and he continues to get “tons” of hand-written letters from the staff.

“A lot of people tell you that you have to commit to a school, because you never know what might happen to the coaches,” said Apodaca. “I committed for both reasons. I love both school and coaching staff. I just loved everything about it.

“Other schools know how solid I am with WSU… We all are really excited and on behalf of the other recruits I’ve talked to, we can’t wait to sign and can’t wait to get out there and go to work."

TWO OF THE big bodies who figure to be protecting Apodaca down the road are o-linemen Sam Flor out of O’Dea High in Seattle and Eduardo Middleton Oceanside High in California.

“Honestly, I still feel like Wulff and the coaching staff are heading in the right direction. I like them a lot. I’m supporting them,” said Flor.

Middleton echoed those sentiments. “I’m still 100-percent committed,” he said. “If there was a coaching change, that would be unfortunate. If there was a coaching change, you don’t know if you’re their guy so I guess that is something to think about. But I'm committed to WSU. And let’s just see how they finish out the season.”

Both Middleton and Flor added that they continue to have “great” conversations weekly with the WSU coaching staff.
