Cougar baseball: 3 are gone

Garry Kuykendall

PULLMAN -- Senior outfielder Garry Kuykendall, a starter on Washington State's regional qualifying team, has quit school, a WSU spokesman said Tuesday. In addition, sophomore pitcher Travis Cook has left the team, and head coach Donnie Marbut confirmed that junior pitcher David Stilley has been kicked off the team for what a school spokesman called "multiple team violations."

Stilley and senior pitcher Paris Shewey were suspended from the baseball team in November after being arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Charges were recently dropped against Shewey, who led the Cougars with seven wins and 30 games pitched last season. He has been reinstated to the team. David Stilley, a former starting pitcher who missed most of last season with arm trouble, is scheduled to appear in Whitman County District Court on Jan. 20.

Kuykendall batted leadoff and started in center or left field most of the past two seasons on WSU's regional qualifying team. He hit .284 with a team-high 13 stolen bases last season. A WSU spokesperson said Kuykendall quit school. No reason was given for his departure, but Kuykendall was held out of fall workouts to focus on academics.

Cook appeared in 11 games as a starter and reliever, posting a 1-3 record and 6.33 earned run average.
